The Death of free internet

I guess with only netzero left, they can do whatever they want. Only 40 hours/week now. I've set up 3 computers at my house and somehow they know. I have caller ID block yet somehow netzero knows and ends internet connection once the combination of any 3 of them goes over 40 hours. Damn, the free web is dead. So much for "Defender of the free World"

At first I got away with creating a new member/ID, but they caught on real quick and put an end to that.

then I clear the reg and some other netzero files and recreated member/id. Worked but they caught on to that too.

then I hooked up 3 computers for network, install a modem on each. They caught up to this real quick and allow only one of the PC to log on to the internet.

thanks netzero, for destroying free internet. By putting everyone else out of business. How ironic that they advertise free internet all over the airwave, yet, they are the ones who ultimately destroyed it.

hardware costs money, advertisers pay for hardware, users don't respond to advertising. Free interenet service dies.

Do you know how much crap small, local ISPs went through because of netzero and the other free ISP's? Obviously not, because you'll miss them. I won't miss netzero at all.

I was always happy to see customers who left us for free ISP's come back. They were usually very quiet and rarly called us with "problems"

The DotCom bubble has burst people. Go back to using it like you did before you could get insane amounts of crap for free.

Yeah, I remember, Cheap service. $9/month when everybody else was charging $20. No banners. Rare busy dailups. Rare drops.

Once I get my paid ISP, I can say goodbye to Netzero forever.

Why should some get it free and not everybody?

This is a Republic after all and not a democracy.

There are a few still alive: Netzero, Juno, Bluelight, and DotNow (that I know of). NZ is the most reliable for me, the other ones drop connections easily, and Juno got rid of the web # completely in my town (probably a smart idea in Gainesville). Paying for 56K almost seems like a waste. When I move next month I'll be looking into Cox Cable.

alright! found bluelight.
only 12 hours/month though.

I guess it's at&t isp for me. $4.95/month is good.

Mwilding,
You must still be in jr school. If it makes you feel better, you can make a donation to Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS every time you watch their channel.

Dunno about you, but why do people expect internet to be free, or get paid for using it.
I pay my $40/month for my DSL and I feel proud. Those who do pay get good service and help future development. Those who don't and go around trying to remove banners, and save a penny on free internet, let's put it this way "not nice".

Ever heard this before?

You get what you pay for.

You must be so proud of yourself. Whoopie do , you pay $40/month for DSL, your helping the internet. Good for you. You deserve a cookie.
You must be so much better than the rest of us. I wonder if you'll still feel equally proud when free radio and television programming becomes extinct..

I guess most people here don't bother to read before they post. Netzero not only destroyed free internet, they destroyed cheap internet. Read MrBonds post.

As for Mwilding and narrow minded snobs like like him who don't bother to think before they post. No people like me don't expect free internet. But I don't expect free TV and free Radio either. But the thing is, free internet and cheap internet was here, but netzero destroyed it and they did drive out of business many other company. Their television ad for a free internet made them popular and destroyed competitors. Now that they've won, they've yanked free internet and left a trial of dust so that people like me can't even go back to the good oh days.

Are you paying for Cable right now? How would you feel if netzero started providing cheap cable for $5/month, drove out all the other providers and then raise rates to $100/month?

You are putting a whole cr@pload of words into people's mouth. Are you automatically labeling everyone who use free isps as cheap little cheaters who goes around removing banners? So if people like me use free isps, then we're automatically cheaters and not nice? Thank you for your brilliant deduction. Like I said, people like you act like snobs who think they're better than everyone else.

There's a reason why TV and Radio will remain free: their advertisements work and they know their demographic. People are finding out on the internet that hosting sites costs big money and advertisers and venture capitalists aren't giving money anymore. Netzero didn't kill free internet, all of the free internet companies were going to dropping before Netzero. They couldn't afford to keep giving people free internet access with high server bills while the people didn't click on the banners. If you want quality internet access you have to pay for it.

How many hours a week do you spend online? Judging from your posts, a lot. You can spend more in one night than you can on a month of Internet access. Nothing is free - ever. You want decent TV reception? Cable or sattelite sets you back $40 to $100 a month. Broadcasts, you say? Number one, you get sh!t quality reception, and #2, you get all of six channels. That would be like NetZero allowing you only access to MSN and Yahoo, but nothing else. That's not the way it worked. You can't compare broadcast TV to free Internet because the free Internet gave you access to everything paid Internet did. Since people kept on trying to circumvent advertising, and others didn't respond, how long did you think it was going to last?

Nothing is free - EVER. NetZero had huge bills to foot. They couldn't give you service for free that cost them money to provide.

ATT is like $5/mo I think, and there are still many providers at $10/mo. For two days a month, don't eat out fast food and pack your lunch. With the money you save you can foot the $10 that gives you 100+ hrs a month of online time.

Don't be a miser - Internet fees are one of the most efficient price/use ratios. For $10/mo you get 100+ hours of use, and I can't think of anything else that comes down to $.10/hr.

And Supercyrix -

mwilding is a respected member of AT. I have yet to see you post a good number of relavent posts. You're calling him a snob when you're the cheapass that won't pay what amounts to $.10/hr. I remember when Internet was like $5 hour + monthly fees.

The death of everything free on the internet is long gone and will never come back. So many of the sites I used to love are gone and will soon be gone because the networks they used to be a part of went bankrupt and didn't pay them their money. A lot of onine games are starting to charge monthly fees to play. It's unfortunate that everything on the internet can't remain free but you gotta make that money to pay the server bills.
