There are some...interesting places in Detroit. Not too long ago I got off of 94 and the drive went something like this:
burned out building, burned out building, burned out building, pawn shop, burned out building, strip club, burned out building, strip club, burned out building, burned out building

I'm pretty sure you forgot "church, church, church, church, church, church, church" in there somewhere.

That Michigan Central Station was one extremely beautiful building both inside and out when it was still in use.

I grew up in the hood around here...so I wanted to see what Detroit's hood was like. HOLY SHIT! I took my lil white boy butt out of there as soon as I could turn around. 8 Mile wasn't that big of a deal...its a freaking 6 lane highway. But 7 was just scary.

What part of 7 mile is particularly bad? I just streetviewed down it and granted that doesn't imitate the feel of it but it didn't look all that bad to me.

This section here amused me. shitty house, shitty house, abandoned lot, shitty house....wtf, small section of 5 new clean houses with nice sidewalks (but shitty cars outside)...abandoned lot, shitty houses.

There are tons of old factories in Detroit that were never torn down after they were abandoned. I worked in a few.


Here is one place I worked in 25 years ago. Plant #14 Fisher Guide Fort Street. We made all the door hinges in that plant. The place closed up in '89.

Pretty scary how quickly a wealthy, thriving city can deteriorate to..that.. in such a relatively short period of time. Even many places in third-world countries look much better than that.

The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit is an older website with lower quality pictures, but it has history for the pictures.

Number 11 is out of date. I worked there during the restoration.
edit: number 13 is in an old high school scheduled for demolition this year.

They have been trying to step up the demolition process, but it's slow going so far.

I've spent a few hours going through that site. It's a shame they're tearing down the buildings. There's some real gems in there, and could be made productive if you could get businesses/people in the area.

I was there about 10 or 11 years ago working for SBC on a short term project. It was weird seeing blocks and blocks of abandoned homes. And when I say blocks of abandoned homes I mean that in a literal sense. There were some streets that were roped and blocked off, every last home on those type of streets were either abandoned or burned out.

It was eerie, downtown wasn't much better. The streets and buildings were filthy, trash was blowing everywhere. I can only imagine with the economy the way it is now that things are even worse there. That's a real life example of a dying city.

They just spent the last year bulldozing those houses in the old neighborhoods.

The same thing is being done to houses that many were never even moved into in Georgia. They built massive 60,000 house subdivisions all over the place that only a fraction had people move in and then foreclosed anyway.

They had one subdivision where a house went on fire and it took out three blocks because they are all on top of each other (called Zero lots).

The best thing to do is bulldoze all this shit, never should have been built to begin with.

Towns like this have existed throughout American history. This is just the most recent "Ghost Town" we've had in a while...one that had a significant investment in $$ for infrastructure and not some shanty town like the Old West 1800s.

There's more like this. I know East-St. louis, IL is just as bad, with it's downtown and nice 40s-60s buildings totally empty
