No poll... I think they are dumb.

I might have to do a paper on this and wanted some ideas. Of course, given my sig... it shouldn't be to hard to figure out who I favor, but I'm curious what ATOT thinks.

They didn't have to release their first album in the 90's, this is more of a word association exercise. The 90's band = ____________. Maybe a small explanation why you think that.

I'll go first-

Creed.

Now where I've set the bar, I expect nothing but great answers.

Agreed.

While the style is a very acquired taste and I still have to be in the mood for them, I think they'll be one that sticks around for years to come.

Blah - Creed? They came out in late 98, released their second album in Oct 99, and blew up some more in the early 2000's until Scott Stepp decided to bless us with his exit out of the band.

My Own Prison was released in July of '97 as a single.

Nirvana.

runner-up: Spice Girls at least in my mind, they symbolize the irrelevant, halcyon days of the mid/late 90's.

ok... that was a sarcastic answer.

Given the line- Now where I've set the bar, I expect nothing but great answers.

Meaning, any OTHER answer will be better than Creed.

And now that I've read that, I've confused myself.... sorry.

Pearl Jam.

Edit: Wikipedia agrees:

While Nirvana had brought grunge to the mainstream in the early 1990s, Pearl Jam quickly outsold them and became not only the most popular alternative rock band, but the most popular American rock band of the decade.[6] Pearl Jam has been described as "modern rock radio's most influential stylists ? the workmanlike midtempo chug of songs like "Alive" and "Even Flow" just melodic enough to get moshers singing along."[74] The band inspired and influenced a number of bands, ranging from Silverchair to Puddle of Mudd and even The Strokes.[75][76] Pearl Jam has outlasted many of its contemporaries in the grunge scene like Nirvana and Soundgarden, and even bands it has influenced such as Creed.[1]

Nirvana is certainly a top contender. Hell, they're basically the only contender considering how many great 90's Bands are almost all influenced by Nirvana. Not quite as influential as the Beatles were in the 60's, but the closest thing to the Beatles of the 90's you'll find.

I think I hit my knee on the bar.

I would give them a very close runner up followed by Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, and Smashing Pumpkins for third, fourth and fifth.

I keep hearing that... but you can trace Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, RHCP etc. back before Nirvana or at the same time. I can't think of one truly big band that Nirvana influenced- and Foo Fighters doesn't count

edit: and as it's been said before, killing himself was the best career decision cobain made. Do you really think they'd still be popular today if they were still around?

And here we do have Pearl Jam selling out shows on the east coast(including MSG) this summer.... headlining bonaroo, after last year headlining and playing in front of a HUGE lolapalooza crowd.

Pearl Jam.

That was going to be my response.

Pearl Jam is not the defining band of the 90's. They are a great band, but in the history books they are always going to be second to Nirvana simply because Nirvana broke out of Seattle before Pearl Jam did.

Music varies too much within a decade and there are many parallel trends that makes it hard to define "the band"

Rock/Alternative: Pearl Jam, Nirvana. (Creed wtf)
Pop: N'Sync, Backstreet Boys (groan all you want, whether you like their music is irrelevant. they led the boyband resurrgence of the late 90)
Punk: Maybe Blink 182?

Pearl Jam.. Nirvana had the bigger break-out but Pearl Jam has the staying power both in terms of surviving and in terms of how their music will translate to future generations.
