Nirvana, NIN, or STP was partial to Soundgarden as well.

Creed....lol, Bush and Beck were more significant in the 90's then Creed was

Nirvana.

Pearl Jam? They had some great hits, but their more recent albums are relatively unknown. Yeah sure they "lasted" longer than Nirvana, but being a 10 for a couple years is better than being a 7 for a couple decades.

I'm wrong about a matter of opinion. LAWL.

I asked if I was allowed to make another stupid assumption. Perhaps I was not implying that your were in grade school at the time, but simply that I equate your opinion to one of such ilk. I think it's very important that you realize when I am directly insulting you; like now.

Another reader who didn't bother to actually comprehend what I wrote: I don't think Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, or BoyzIIMen defined the sound of the nineties either, but those are the highest selling artists in America during that decade. What I did say is that most people, just like me, are going to equate the sound of an era to what they were listening to at the time.

If you want to look at it in terms of sales, you have a clear answer. If you want to look at it in terms of influence, you can see now that I am correct in naming NIN, Tool, Radiohead, the Flaming Lips, and Portishead. The subtle influence of "Art Rock" (LAWL) has been engrained in most popular music now. Even today's pure pop contains elements of influence directly from these bands, when in the past pop and elevator could have been interchanged without notice or concern. People today are smarter and savvier than in the past. Their tastes are broader and more refined on average, and for this they demand more intricate, multi-layered, oddly-timed, and multi-genera influenced music.

If you want to define definitive yourself, as the question demands that we do, then it is simply a matter of opinion, so to say I am wrong is about as epic fail as you can get.

FAIL!

Well, this question is sort of regional as well. In the US, I guess you could make a case for it....However, in the UK, they were (along with Blur) the center of 90's music.

i'm gonna go with Nirvana. I thought they had better songs than PJ. I could go through all of their albums and listen to them all complete without having to skip songs. i could not say that for PJ, STP, AiC and many others.

As for punk, i'd give the nod to Green Day. hell they're my number 2 for the overall question IMHO.

Thats just madness. Across the board, without a dought, PJ has better songs.

The title of the thread says the definitive 90's band, not the first/most influential band who's lead singer killed himself.

But I agree with others who have mentioned, AiC and Soundgarden. Also the mention of Live is nice, even though they're obviously not in the discussion of "definitive 90s band".

lol i saw Live when i was in HS in the lats 90s and then again when they played at college in 2003

i LOLed, both shows were good

You LOLed at what? I said they weren't in the discussion, for good reason. They aren't even close to the level of popularity and influence of PJ, Nirvana, even AIC and Soundgarden.

i loled that i saw them twice liek 8 years apart it was funny to me
that previous post of mine had nothing to do with the discussion here

My very first thought was Nirvana. They basically took gangsta-rap out of the main scene. Thank god! You people remember that gansta raop crap? Ya, that is reason enough.

Also, Metallica black album was released. There last good album, but also their most polished.

I'll toss Phish out there. You may not think it, but they were the top grossing tour for several years straight. I think breaking $200M/year more than once. They might not have been mainstream, but in terms of Jam Bands, they were the tige woods. Second place was never in sight.

A good list I found with some reasons:

1. Garth Brooks- made that crappy country music wildly popular.

2. Nirvana-Introduced a brand new genre to the masses. Unfortunately, it killed off rock music as we knew it. And the self inflicted shotgun blast led to...

3. The Backstreet Boys- The rise of boyband music killed music as we knew it. Dear God.

4. Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre- Rap goes wild. Dr. Dre makes a fortune

5. Dave Matthews Band-- From small beginnings began the first cult band in a long time. Wildly popular and still never considered a sell out. Great Live shows due to their propensity to "jam".

Love it or hate it. This list is brutally honest and I have to admit that it is pretty damned accurate. As much as I hate Garth Brooks, he did have his place.

I'll agree with everything except I think Nirvana should be number one as far as 'definitive' goes. When people think 90's, they think grunge and Nirvana was the icon of grunge. Kobain's suicide made him as much an icon of 90's rock as Biggie/Tupac's deaths made them icons of hip hop.

Personally I think America's propensity to latch onto squeaky clean pop acts was a direct result of Marilyn Manson's appearance on the scene. Yes, his music was shit but by proclaiming himself the Antichrist he garnered a lot of attention and public outcry and paved the way for the bullshit goth scene.

As far as hip hop goes you have to include Tupac and Biggie. They built upon the G Funk scene's success and made Hip Hop change from relatively benign party music into the bullshit fake gangster circle jerk sideshow that it has become today.

Personally my ears were tuned into That Now Sound coming from across the pond that never gained any traction stateside. I was smoking a lot of weed and enjoying all the 'chill out' and d&b music of the time and really became interested in the jazz influence which lead to me becoming a digger. Good times.

Pearl Jam.

That was going to be my response.

Pearl Jam is not the defining band of the 90's. They are a great band, but in the history books they are always going to be second to Nirvana simply because Nirvana broke out of Seattle before Pearl Jam did.

Alice In Chains and Soundgarden both broke out of Seattle before Nirvana did. So they certainly didn't play second fiddle to Nirvana.

(AIC was touring with Van-Halen and had heavy rotation on MTV while Nevermind was being written.)

Sure, but which band had BIG mainstream success first? Oh, yeah. That was Nirvana.

Wrong!

Alice in Chains had BIG mainstream success first. You don't tour with Van-Halen in 91 or get heavy rotation on MTV without it.

Since someone already mentioned REM, I'm going to toss out 10,000 Maniacs. The Lilith Fair/girl band/singer-songwriter genre (Sarah McLachlan, Shawn Colvin, Jewel, Lisa Loeb, Paula Cole, etc) was just as big of a feature of the 90s as was grunge.

Depeche Mode, but I'm always late to the party. Nirvana was really popular at a time when I was listening to early blues and had completely tuned out pop music. Therefore, like Perl Jam and Brittney Spears tunes, I couldn't name a single Nirvana song if my life depended on it. The 90s were when MTV sucked so bad it collapsed into a black hole (okay, a white hole since they had eminem). Tragically I do recall a Creed song that hurt my ears. Sheryl Crow kicked butt in the 90s.

Good, consistent band but I think they are relatively unknown in the United States (or so I hear). They haven't made many great records but they have made a whole bunch of good ones.

I like them and truly enjoy reading anything Noel Gallagher has to say.

What year do you think Smells Like Teen Spirit was released in? Oh yeah! 1991!

I actually think that is a great list. Again, IMO... I'd put Pearl Jam > Nirvana. That does have some bias in it... and maybe in the spirit of the question, Nirvana might be on top. I do think when the 90's are mentioned, Nirvana is one of the, if not the, first thought that comes to mind.
