Ok, someone's tailgating you on a two lane normal road. You're going the speed limit. Their headlights are up yer rear bumper. What do you do?

I always maintain my speed and ignore them. When I was 16-17 and just got my license I used to slam my brakes

I always slow down, not always to piss them off, but because if you're going slower they have to go slower so if you have to break hard, they have a better chance at stopping before hitting you, and if they hit you the damage won't be as bad.

You try that down here in South Texas and somebody with no insurance, driving a 1972 Ford Duallie pickup with a cracked winshield and bald tires will run right up your @ss. I kid you not.

If you are in the passing (leftmost) lane and someone wants to pass you, let them pass. You are not the "Keeper of the Speed!" Just b/c you are doing 75 in a 70 does not mean you aren't holding up traffic.

If you would watch your rearview mirror a little more closely, you would be apple to see people coming up fast behind you in plenty of time to move the heck out of the way.

Yeah, if you're on the highway in the leftmost lane, you need to let people pass.......but what about a two lane normal road?

Left lane is always the passing lane, unless there are signs specifically stating "no passing." On a single lane road (one lane in each direction), the yellow line is your guide. Solid yellow on your side of the road means no passing. Dashed line on your side of the road means "passing allowed when safe."

Move over. You have no right to cause another driver to slow down, that's what the police are for.

If you're on a two lane highway, it's a different story.

On a busy road in traffic, I hit my brakes hard to let them know they need to back off. Out on the interstate in no traffic, I speed up to 110 for a few minutes to get away from that motherfvcker.

I let them pass whenever I can... so if I am on a road with 2 lanes, I move over to the right lane so they can pass me... same deal on the highway...

But if there's only one lane, I may speed up a bit or maintain my speed... if I am in a bad mood that day, I tap my brakes (so I am not actually slowing down, but my brake lights come on)... most get the idea and back off...

Agreed- I flash my brights too. I'm usually the guy heading up a speed line with 4 other like-minded drivers behind me wanting to go 85mph, so I have to flash them to the right.

might speed up, might slow down, might tap the brake so it doesn't engage but the light comes on.

Funny, I never have that happen...course I always drive 90-95mph on the highway, so I rarely "hold traffic up"...LOL!

However, I admit I will be the tailgater, and I never understand why people will not just pull over. If you want to avoid a road rage incident, it seems strange that you would slow down or slam on your brakes as that would just serve to increase the "rage" of the tailgating driver. It's just so much easier to pull over and let the person go by...

if the other lane is full, speed up and let them pass

if the other lane ISN'T, and he's riding my ass for ships and giggles....

tap the brakes 3x, give him a warning.....

afterwards, stomp on brake

speed up

he tries to pass, speed up x lanes slow down

repeat en masse until he leaves 100++ feet of room

Slam on the breaks and cash a check.

Seriously though, I just maintain my speed. There isn't anything you can do about a tailgater.

Couldn't you just pull to the right, let them pass, and be done with it? Why keep your speed constant and have them continue to tailgate you?

I absolutely detest tailgaters. Not only is it monumentally stupid, it is also dangerous and illegal. If the car they are behind is going under the speed limit, they can feel free to pass when legal, but should not feel free to create a potential hazard for all of the other drivers.

"Slow down even more just to piss 'em off" is what i voted, and what i do!

Really funny, one time i was driving back from my GFs house, it was like 1am, no one else on the road, and this car pulled out behind me, and then started to tailgate me. I normally do about 38mph in a 30 limit (my car reads 10% high, so actually about 34-35) if there's no one around, but at the time i decided to do 30 (so actually about 27-28) all the way. Then, as soon as i hit National Limit (60mph) i floored it, and by the first corner into the National, i couldn't see him behind me!

I'll let them by every time. Tailgating annoys me. Why would I want to keep them behind me, when I'll only get more annoyed?
