I don't say the words memtest in my post at all. I have had multiple experiences with every board in there, I also put the DS3 in. There are now 3 revisions of the DS3. The first one is absolutely terrible. If you RMA you will get either the Second or Third verison. The second version is good, the third is bordering on great.

The G.Skill that uses Micron is decent. The G.Skill that uses Eplida is pretty terrible. It is rated for high clocks DDR2-800 and out of 10 sticks I have had now, only 5 could hit the rated timings of 4-4-4-12 @ DDR2-800.

As for the E6600 not working well on a DS3. 400*9 is pretty easy to do and doesn't take much of a challenge. The 4 meg cache thing has been more or less a cop out for most people. You still see people that have a lot of experience in clocking, and know what they are doing able to hit high FSB's with 965 and 4 meg cache. If you can hit 7*466, you are simply not giving the core enough voltage @ 9 ratio to be able to hit high speeds.

Yoxxy,

Quick question - Vapochill LS + QX6700 ... what mobo to get to avoid cold-bug & have highest chance of max overclock of the quad? Was hoping the 680i would be good enough so I can throw an 8x areca into one of the 16x PCIe slots.

Thx for the time - Phil

I have a DS3 board with f6 bios and it's rock soild .. and have had no issues running my e6600 on Corsair pc6400.. I have tested up to 2.9Ghz and it really eats 3DMark05 cpu test up.. it's scores 11,356 points on 1 gig of ram and it has took my single 7900GTO to it's all time highest mark of 12,030 points and that is stock with coolbits overclock of 704/1610..

This thread, and Yoxxy's other thread about memory should be stickied.

Think of all the pointless questions threads it would eliminate! Come on mods!

Where are Sections II - IV? I can only see Section I.
I went through the whole thread.

I am new at OCing and would like to read the rest.

Everything is broken. The bb has a problem with very large posts. IT eats parts of the posts when you edit them.

Stickay? The time of A64 overclocking is over, this thread should be stickied to replace the old A64 one.

Updated now. I will do the benchmark test when I have some time. I need to make a second post, because when it gets too long it eats the middle of the post.

Very Nice guide. Another vote for a stickie!!!!

I too am an OC noob and am having trouble with My E6600-Asus p5n32-E sli OC and would appreciate any help anybody can give me.
I have a week 26 E6600 and cant get it past 3.1 Ghz. I have OCZ PC7200 platinum SLi edition running at 1000mhz. Timings are 5 5 4 15. vdimm set at 2.3V. (stock timings are 4 4 3 15)
Ram only warrantied up to 2.31 volts.

First of I have not set my NB and SB voltage yet as suggested in your guide. I will do that when I get home. Will that help?
It seems that I cannot get the cpu to OC past 3.1mhz regardless of the voltage. (only went to to 1.4125v though) Is it just because I got an early release chip or do I need more voltage. I have Scythe ninja for HS
Also do you think i can get more out of my memory? It willpost at 1100 mhz but will crash windows when I runn any program.

Thanks again for any advice anybody might have

Yoxxy, great guide(s).

One question:
What about the Biostar TForce965PT for a budget overclocker?
It's $10 cheaper than the Gigabyte 965P-S3 on Newegg and it's supposed to OC even better without the memory compatibility problems, acc. to the AT review.

Any experience with it?

Very good board. After 420 fsb or so it needs to have active cooling on the northbridge as it gets quite hot. If you stay below that you will like the board though.

Thanks for the reply.

Does the S3 have that same NB cooling issue or is it specific to the Biostar?

Yeah, they all start to get very hot around 420. It is not really a major surgery to add a fan though. You can either ziptie a 40mm or 60mm to the heatsink, or buy a chipset cooler. I would go with the second choice, but if you don't want to pull stuff off your mobo choose the first.

I have an intake case fan on the side of my PC blowing straight onto it. Lucky for some .

I was thinking about doing that (the first choice... even though I might anyway reseat the heatsink on the Biostar NB to replace all that cake icing they use with a bit of AS5 ). But which way should the fan point? On top of the heatsink pointing down at the motherboard, to blow air down straight at the chip? I was thinking maybe there wouldn't be enough airflow like that, like putting the fan right up against a wall.

So I was thinking maybe mount the fan on the side of the heatsink blowing through it from the side.

Which way is best?

Either way would work well, but I think directly blowing onto it instead of just past the fins of the heatsink would do better.
