I think the envelope was to explain his identity and had a contact # for Wahlberg's character since he gave it to her "in case something happens to me".

It would also explain how he got access to Sullivan's apartment and knew he was the rat.

I was wondering this also and this seems to be the best answer I've heard.

I was disappointed with this movie. Some/most of the violence seemed forced. Don't get me wrong, I like violent movies, but I like it when there's a reason.

Saw it last night - this flick is vastly overrated, IMO, and I just can't understand how it gets the reviews it does. Nicholson/Castello is the closest any of the characters come to being 3 dimensional and sympathetic - the others are absolutely paper-thin. The plot, on a large scale, moves forward like a freight train, slowly and without any uncertainty as to the overall direction, despite some occasionally surprising twists in the details. The dialogue is nothing special. I'll grant that Scorsese's talent for camera work comes through and gives you a sense of jolting violence at numerous points (even when there isn't any violence per se on screen). But any movie, and especially any crime movie, has got to have characters and plot to drive it. And The Departed really falls flat on those basics.

The plot moves straight ahead in a very certain direction. You have the two opposing characters introduced within the first 20 minutes, and it should be clear they are on a path towards a confrontation with each other. The entire movie then builds the dramatic tension towards that inevitable confrontation.

I believe that's what he meant by "slowly and without any uncertainty"

Saw it. Very good movie... ending wasnt what I wanted, but it was good.

***Spoilers***

1. I also thought the baby was Costigan's

2. Wahlberg is an absolute lunatic. I dont think he was acting. It was awesome, but I dont think I'd like him personally.

3. Nicholson was over the top and Costello's moment of vulnerability didnt work as well as it should (specifically when Costigan asked him why he was still doing this - I havent seen IA, but I thought it was partly because the Feds were making him do it. They wouldnt let him quit until he brought down enough people)

4. The envelope thing is still bugging the hell out of me.

5. The guy who capped Costigan is an idiot. He could have easily let Sullivan take the fall and remained anonymous. What did he get for his trouble? Exactly. In that way, he felt like a forced plot device. Didnt care for that much at all.

6. The part where Sullivan breaks down in the elevator would have worked better if it tied in with the end more. Problem is, he didnt show many cracks in his armor, and when you finally get to see them, they seem a tad forced. Would have been better as a very slow/subtle build up to the elevator scene, and then him resigning to his fate at the end.

Oops forgot another spoiler near and dear to ATOts heart...

*** SPOILER ***

How about when Alec Baldwin went postal on the tech geek guy and beat him down? Just goes to show: when in doubt, always blame the IT department. Cops are no different.

My husband and I saw "The Departed" this past weekend; neither of us have seen "Infernal Affairs," although we will be sure to rent that soon.

He absolutely loved the movie, and his favorite line was about how to deal with feds: "Feed 'em sh!t and leave 'em in the dark."

There was only one thing that irked me throughout the film in terms of its realism.

The "psychiatrist/psychologist" violated so many ethical codes in the film, she would have her license revoked in a heartbeat. Dual relationships, anyone?

The worst example of dual relationships involves clinicians who have sexual relationships with their clients. It's considered a felony in several states. Hollywood seems to think that there's nothing wrong with it (i.e. with the psychologist's ridiculous line, "You're not my client anymore, so we can talk freely/have sex/etc.), which is really bizarre, given the amount of therapy taking place there.

Just in case anyone's wondering, it is a serious ethical and legal violation to have any sort of intimate contact with a client outside of the therapeutic setting. We are even discouraged acknowledging our clients in public with a wave or a nod, since it is important to protect the privacy of our clients and to avoid dual relationships.

Other than that, I enjoyed it and would see it again.

Spoilers galore

Thought I'd add something about "who's yo daddy":

When Madelyn finds out about Sullivan's true identity/role, she says "and I thought I was the only liar"...I immediately assumed that she was referring to the baby. Combined with the previously mentioned ED of Sullivan, I think it makes sense. Also, she doesn't even blink when she's leaving Castigan's funeral when Sullivan asks her "what about the baby"...what does she care, it's not his anyway. (That, or because she had already called in Marky Mark and knew that Sullivan was a dead man)

i didnt see it that way though. she wrote him the prescription and said she was recommending him to a colleague. and then he remarked that since she was no longer his shrink if she would be interested in a cup of coffee. after that their discussions seemed to center more around her personal life which in a way gave me the impression that they were now acquaintances as opposed to psychologist/client. it wouldnt even be all that awkward considering the fact the she never really got a chance to delve into his psyche at all.

meh, the first part of the movie was good, then they introduced the whole relationship thing, and then a bunch of people died.

You may see it one way, but all professional associatons governing the ethics of the psychotherapy profession see it otherwise. If I only see a client once, for a 1-hour intake, and then refer the client elsewhere, I would lose my license if I were to "date" or see that client outside of the clinical setting within 2 years after the intake.

I know it contributed to the plot in the movie, but no MD/PsyD/PhD/MFT/MSW/etc. who values their license would dare to do the same IRL without severely jeapordizing their licensure.

According to APA (American Psychological Assocation) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct:

4.07 Sexual Intimacies With Former Therapy Patients.

(a) Psychologists do not engage in sexual intimacies with a former therapy patient or client for at least two years after cessation or termination of professional services.

(b) Because sexual intimacies with a former therapy patient or client are so frequently harmful to the patient or client, and because such intimacies undermine public confidence in the psychology profession and thereby deter the public's use of needed services, psychologists do not engage in sexual intimacies with former therapy patients and clients even after a two-year interval except in the most unusual circumstances. The psychologist who engages in such activity after the two years following cessation or termination of treatment bears the burden of demonstrating that there has been no exploitation, in light of all relevant factors, including (1) the amount of time that has passed since therapy terminated, (2) the nature and duration of the therapy, (3) the circumstances of termination, (4) the patient's or client's personal history, (5) the patient's or client's current mental status, (6) the likelihood of adverse impact on the patient or client and others, and (7) any statements or actions made by the therapist during the course of therapy suggesting or inviting the possibility of a post-termination sexual or romantic relationship with the patient or client. (See also Standard 1.17, Multiple Relationships.)

Other codes of conduct:

4.05 Sexual Intimacies With Current Patients or Clients.

Psychologists do not engage in sexual intimacies with current patients or clients.

4.06 Therapy With Former Sexual Partners.

Psychologists do not accept as therapy patients or clients persons with whom they have engaged in sexual intimacies.

BEST lines in the whole movie:

Captain Ellerby: "F*ck You."
Sergeant Dignam: "No thanks. I'm tired from f*cking your wife."
Captain Ellerby: "How's your mother?"
Sergeant Dignam: "She's tired from f*cking my dad."

My Spoilers
------------------
1) The second rat was really to stay in the State police Unit and cover the street angle and to watch that Damon didn't turn double on Nicholson.

2) The psych, Vera, said to Leo that everybody lies and that she thinks it's to not rock the boat and to keep everything steady. She lied to Damon so that they would get married and move away. The baby was really Leo's and she couldn't live that life with him.

3) Jack was an FBI informant and so was his henchman [that died]. The henchman was his contact. Each side had two moles/rats.

4) There are two envelopes Vera got from Leo. The first was squirreled away that contained Marky Mark's contact information. The second was the CD. Vera couldn't expose her fiance and keep her career intact. Confidant of a rat? So the only way out - to have justice done and to keep her own life intact was to contact Walberg. That way, it looks like a mob style hit and she is the grieving fiance of the departed. That she is now a victim and her man a hero makes it work.

5) If you not paying attention to me, you must be a cawp.

Just got back from seeing it. Most people seem to despise Alec Baldwin, but I like the guy and I thought he was perfect in the role.

That being said, the multiple head shots at the end was a bit much. What was that, like 4 head shots in less than 5 mins? I spent the last 5 mins of the movie with my hands over my mouth going OH SH!T, OH SH!T...breathes...OH SH!T...breathes, thinks everything's ok...OH SH!T

But the rat at the end was priceless

"Want a smoke? What you don't smoke? What are you some kind of fitness freak? ****** you."

His whole rapid-fire line delivery was great.

"Who am I? I'm the guy that does his fvckin' job! You must be the other guy!"

The whole audience was rolling at that

"Patriot Act! Patriot Act! I love the Patriot Act!"

That one really had me cracking

haha i loved that line haha

i thought the multiple headshots at the end was perfect... aside from the realism of the headshots, it was like the grand finale whenever you see fireworks on the 4th of july. it capped off an awesome story with an awesome, twisty, calculated ending.
