Upper class are sustained by income generated through assets.

Middle class work for a living and blow it all on things that make them feel like they are upper class.

Upper middle class just have nicer looking liabilities.

Someone I know, who is upper class, says that the difference is that she worries about her kids getting kidnapped and held for ransom. Scary, but she has a point.

There's an interesting book called Class: A Guide Through the American Status System by Paul Fussell that talks about different classes, including upper middle vs. upper. One of the distinctions he makes in a tongue-in-cheek manner is whether you can see a person's house from the entrance of their driveway.

Fair, but how about:

Person A: Has 2 mill in the bank and lives off the ~160k+ in interest

vs

Person B: Has maybe 500k in the bank, and is salaried at 300k/year

A $100'000 upper middle class not a chance. its way more than $100,000.

In 1950 $100,000 was big money today thats peanuts.

whichever person makes his/her assets/income known is the middle one

IMHO: Middle class has a family income of around $75K.

Upper Middle is probably north of $150K.

Upper class is probably $1M+ yearly.

Upper middle class just have nicer looking liabilities.
This would explain why some people constantly complain about lowering taxes.

If you have to ask for the price BEFORE buying something, you're not upper class. Sound good enough?

I'd say a pretty good indicator would be what day of the week and what time of the day that you play golf.

Peanuts? That's twice what I'm earning. I'd love to earn 100k.

Yea, he doesn't know what he is talking about really since about 80% of Americans don't have that as a household income.... (Multiple Incomes Possible) Probably going straight from definitions 100k/year is the upper middle class, but it doesn't mean you are living life large, since most people live out of their means.

Bumping this.

After consideration and consultation with Wikipedia, I would define it as:

Upper Middle class: Those with household incomes between 100-250,000 and one million or less in investment/inheritance/real estate assets

Upper class: Starts at those with a household income of between 250-300k per year, and for this definition, its preferable that they have +2million in investment/inheritance/real estate assets

Super rich: 100 million+ per year or assets equivalent to 100 million

To an extent, but some wealthy people got their wealth because they are frugal.

And it's still kind of a silly demarcation. Does anyone here really believe those with 100 million in the bank aren't rich because they're going to ask the price of properties or boats they buy?
