I'll have to read bill in full, but it sounds like they may finally have gotten it right. There's nothing wrong with asking for some form of civil service, as long as it's EVERYONE and not just men that have to do it. There can be NO exceptions, especially not for the presidents own children. EVERYONE serves if anyone does. It can't be required military, because not everyone believes in harming others. But something. Reserve police officer, medical assistant, community service, park ranger, etc.

I like the idea of giving an option. If you accept civil service and complete it you can receive government assistance, like school loans and pell grants and unemployment. I think the montgomery gi bill should get a boost too and be offered to any civil service participant, not just military. Or keep the gi bill military but add another that anyone can get. If you choose not to serve, you can NEVER for any reason get ANY help from and state or federal agency, PERIOD.

I completely agree. However the only thing that worries me is this part:

"in a civilian capacity that, as determined by the President, promotes the national defense, including national or community service and homeland security.

I'd rather Congress decide on that

Agreed. I'd rather go a step farther and say that each state could enact thru general legislation a listing of required jobs that they want to be allowed to fulfill the civic requirement. This duty should be more about community and local service that purely national service anyway. So if Alaska needs a ton of park rangers they could vote to allow rangers to fulfill the requirement, while california ok's lifeguards or beach cleanup crew.
this subject could be a whole new thread. But id say national is a better idea than local. One thing ive learned being in a national service is a lot of people get pretty blinded by thier locale, and if it werent for them being shipped to different parts of the country, meeting people from all 50 states, then eventually being shipped overseas, many of them would still be very narrowminded. Being exposed to the various cultures and dialects that exist just within the united states has been educational to say the least.

They are trying to bring back the draft. A bill before the Senate:

quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

...

(a) OBLIGATION FOR YOUNG PERSONS- It is the obligation of every citizen of the United States, and every other person residing in the United States, who is between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform a period of national service as prescribed in this Act unless exempted under the provisions of this Act.

(b) FORM OF NATIONAL SERVICE- National service under this Act shall be performed either--

(1) as a member of an active or reserve component of the uniformed services; or

(2) in a civilian capacity that, as determined by the President, promotes the national defense, including national or community service and homeland security.
Text

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time to write your Senator and let him know that the draft should not come back.
(End Quote)

Actually, I have thought that it was a mistake doing away with the draft for years. The draft did establish a more even playing field than there is today. Many of the liberals in these forums wax verbose about Bush avoiding the war in RVN and yet would be against the draft.

The two things that the draft would do that come immediately to mind is:

1. Weapons training for all. That may go a long way toward quelling the superstitious paranoia that now exists in the liberal camp (guess who doesn't seem to do much service these dayd?) of today.

2. It would take young men out of a negative environment such as the inner city and expose them to an altogather different environment.

3. if they would bring back KP too, perhaps some of the boys and girls out there would discover how to cook and clean a kitchen!

House Crushes Military Draft Bill - Reuters via Yahoo

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives on Tuesday crushed a bill to reinstitute the draft as Republicans accused Democrats of raising the specter of compulsory military service to turn voters against President Bush (news - web sites)'s reelection bid.

After a bitter debate on Bush's handling of Iraq (news - web sites), the House killed the bill 402-2 as Republicans sought to stamp out rumors of an impending draft that have swept college campuses and the Internet, worrying young people and parents across the country. . . . . .
You may now resume with other more popular moonbat theories already in progress

Seeing the list of people who created this draft proposal, I'd say that if Kerry gets elected a draft would be eminent.

After all, every single one of the cosponsors of this latest draft proposal has acknowledged their support for Kerry.

Go see my conservative classification thread. You belong in the nationalist / racist category apparently since you are suggesting black people and jail go hand in hand.
