My computer usualy takes around 30 seconds to load up. Than one time it decided to take more than a minuet. Nothing was installed. I noticed it happened when the cable modem went out, but that can't have anything to do with the drive right? I mean nothing was installed. I got a 100gig drive partitioned into Win98 and XP Pro running at 7200RPMs. Why would something just all of a sudden take longer to load up? Any ideas?

when the nic card is searching for an internet source, it can take a long time for your computer to start up, simply because it's looking for something to connect to!

Exactly. Windows eventually times out and assigns a 169.254.x.x address to itself after timing out.

Yep, default TCP/IP timeout values are 60 seconds. If your cable modem does not reply, it does affect your windows boot time... It keeps trying until it reaches the timeout interval then assigns itself and internal 169.254.x.x address as mentioned above. Your boot delay should go away once your cable service is back up.

The cool thing with Win2k is that if it doesn't find a network, it assigns one of two addresses:

169.254.x.x and 0.0.0.0

with the 169.254.x.x address, windows 2000 will keep attempting a DHCP IP renewal request every 300 seconds. If it's assigned itself a 0.0.0.0 address, it's saying "eh, I give up."
