I decided to dig out my dad's first smartphone (as well as mine)

The good ol' A855, also known as the Motorola Droid 1/Milestone.

Now, this bad boy packs an impressive ARM Cortex A8 @ 550mhz, 256 DDR (SDRAM), 512mb of onboard flash memory, PowerVR SGX 530, 854 × 480 px screen.

I had to relearn how to use RSDLite in order to root this sucker.

I must say, I'm still impressed with its performance, it handles basic browsing pretty well. I haven't tried any games yet.

Currently downloading CM 7.2.0

I'm going to see how this little phone will play emulator games, since I wanted this phone as my little GBA emulator I could bring to school and use. I could use my Gnex as an emulator but I use that for ATOT and OCN browsing, as well as texting. The N7 doesn't give me the classic GBA feel, having a small device gives me a nostalgic feeling.

Any who, I'll get pics up later.

Oh yeah, do any of y'all "recycle" your phones (as in, repurposing them for other uses?)

My OG Droid lives a life of leisure in the bedside dock.

The screen is still one of the best ever. I do find it to be a slow, laggy, frustrating son of a gun though.

I use my Samsung Continuum as a backup sometimes. Plus sometimes I use it just for old times sake.

That screen is good? I don't know about that. I have one, and it's pretty bad. Backlight bleed, small, etc. Add in the slow and lagginess, and it's pretty much unusable lol.

I remember when that phone was the phone to have alongside the iPhone. It was quite a phone back then and smartphones were still essentially a novelty for most back then. It was also the first real mainstream rival to the iPhone.

it was the only decent smartphone on verizon. i remember the thread where people went out and got it, everyone was mad that the gps killed the battery life. id hate to go back to that phone now

Surprisingly this can play Pokemon at 4x speed with no problem. When it gets to 8x, it starts to get choppy.

I repurpose their value into covering the cost of my new phone. If you do it right you can always have a modern high end phone without spending a fortune.

I sold my last phone (3GS) after I got my new one and kinda regretted it. It could have served a second life. I am glad I still have my original iPhone. I need to fix its screen so that one day I can show my kids the device that changed everything.

My wife's old 3GS has been a remote for a while and now is an airplay receiver.

When I replace the SGS2 I might make it into a HTPC.

My current phone also doubles as my current HTPC. So when I upgrade that means I'm upgrading both.

Battery dead after playing GBA on it for 3 hours. Not bad, I know I have another battery for this phone someplace (from my broken Droid 1)
