The easiest way to File Transfer????

Alright, here's the deal. I'm in Texas. She's in California. She needs a 400meg file and doesn't know the first thing about Hotline, or FTP, or IRC but she does have... AIM!!!! So I'm sending this file over AIM and it's going to take 3 hours, and I think to myself, if this file dies 4/5th of the way through, I don't think this program has a resume transfer function. I could be wrong, but there-in lies my question. What is the easiest way to transfer a huge file over the internet that even the most unsophisticated computer user could use? MSN Messenger? Yahoo Messenger? Something else?

Also, she uses OS X, so it would be a good thing if the program was Mac compatible.

You setup a FTP server, and give her the link to download. Ask her to use getright or some download utility, so it will be resumeable if something happen.

If she uses Mac then Hotline would be a nice way to go about things. Other than that, I'd do what beyonddc suggested, setup an FTP...

It's not hard to teach someone how to use hotline or FTP...

I don't know about AIM, but ICQ (for Windows) is able to resume file transfers, and has been for a long time. Setting up an FTP or HTTP server is certainly a good solution, but it takes some time to set up properly. Snail-mailing her a CD is another idea.

Have you thought of mailing the disk to her? That may be less aggravating in the long run!!! And you'd be guaranteed the integrity of the downloaded/copied into. Or how 'bout as an attachment to an email message?

Just a couple of suggestions not otherwise covered!!!

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys. Luckily she got the download just fine. I was just asking for future reference incase I have to send anyone in the future a huge file. I think I'll look into ICQ. I've done the CD snail-mail thing, but she needed the file that night. Thanks again everyone.

another alternative is using someone who has an FTP server on line.
upload to that and tell her where to go to get it.

PM if you ever need again.

Just for reference, sending a large file as an attachment to an email is a bad idea since the encoded version of the file which is transferred is significantly larger (like 30%) than the original file. Also, most email programs aren't designed to download attachments larger than a megabyte or two, and don't offer decent feedback on how much of the attachment has been transferred.

Has anybody ever though of using Napster (in the old days) or Kaaza now. Basically I would rename the file I was sending to something ridiculous that nobody would ever check for, then tell the person on the receiving end to use Kaaza (or, god rest it's soul, Napster) to look up that file name. Doesn't have to be .mp3, or if it does, then just rename the file .mp3 and change it later.
