No offense this is not intended or directed at you but at those who think RedHat being bought out by AOL will spell the doom of Linux. Those of you who think this is a bad thing let's remember that Redhat is not Linux!! They just put out a OS based on the Linux kernel and guidelines. Linux/BSD and OpenSource will never die as long as there are programmers who like a free/secure/stable enviroment to code in left on this planet.

Also there's the fact that even if you don't like them, AOL is fscking huge with a lot of money to throw around. They also are always at it with Microsoft. It looks like they're wanting to get an OS under their belt to compete. Granted RedHat isn't an OS on it's own, but it's the most recognized "brand name" in Linux. I think the money they potentially could pump into Red Hat could be a MAJOR boost for Linux. Even if they don't contribute back to the community at all, it'll still create a larger need for Linux applications if it gets big.

The hardcore people will hate this. IMO, More people using a Linux based OS is definately a good thing, and AOL has the customer base to do this.

This could potentially be a good thing. Redhat could possibly receive a fair amount funding since AOL is always arguing with MS. As long as AOL doesn't dumbify the OS, include propriety programs, etc, etc, I see nothing wrong with this.

And the end of Open Source would be RMS selling out Billy G.

For anyone interested, slashdot links to the article at the Washington Posts site. However, from what I understand this was not printed. When it gets printed in the Post, then there it will be a better matter for discussion.

Many sites post news snippets, slashdot is one, neowin.net is another. Only a few sites have the staffs to actaully produce content, many others just provide a "news is free" service which links to other sites.
