Any past nitpicking about slow starts is obliterated by “Boardwalk Empire’s” opening flurry, as the show attacks its final season with admirable gusto. Looking even more sweeping and cinematic than usual, the early episodes owe a distinctive debt to “The Godfather” saga, using extended flashbacks to provide insight into the character of Nucky Thompson, while jumping among multiple locales. The repeal of Prohibition always felt like a logical end point — indeed, a built-in expiration date — for this splendid HBO series, and if the remainder sustains this level of storytelling, fans should happily hoist a glass to all concerned.


This is a bunch of bs about only 8 episodes and skipping 7 years, right when Capone and Luciano are starting to become big players

yeah, it basically skips all of the big Capone years...which is fine, I guess. The show really isn't about Capone, anyway.

Anyway, it should be good. Best HBO show since Deadwood if you ask me.

From what I understood, he didn't kill it so much as HBO didn't want to keep paying for it? Period shows like that with the elaborate sets and costumes are really expensive to produce (which is why Rome was cancelled, afaik).

I like Boardwalk Empire, and I watch it every week, but the story has been all over the place and it doesn't really do anything that feels fresh or exciting. It's kind of a plodding affair that offers an excuse to drink whiskey from a crystal decanter for ten Sundays in the Fall. Sure, it's not the stupefying mess that True Blood became, but it's not going in the pantheon of all-time great shows from HBO either. It's middling.

I just looked up a list of HBO shows for a lark, and there's a lot more of them than I remember (and a lot of them are much worse than I remember). Of the dramas, I would put Game of Thrones, The Wire, The Sopranos, True Detective, Deadwood and Rome in front of Boardwalk Empire. So I guess it's slightly higher in the rankings than I anticipated. But I can't imagine I'm going to miss it a decade down the road.

Love me some Boardwalk but I'll never compare a good, complete, show to Deadwood.

I want to love this show, and it certainly has moments, but it's utterly impossible for me to take Steve Buschemi seriously in the role he plays. He just doesn't come across as genuine to me at all and it takes me out of the atmosphere of the show.

The whole Gillian situation from the last season ended so laughably bad I literally cringed. I can't believe they went that direction with it.

Michael Shannon on the other hand is fucking incredible and gives the show such a palpable tension it's unreal.

Lastly, Deadwood gets a lot of praise and while the first two seasons were pretty awesome, it ended (prematurely so not really creator's fault) in a really anticlimactic way that really was a let down to me. I've rewatched the series a few times and I always get really let down by the way it was wrapped up. Also the woman who plays the sherrif's wife and also Skylar from Breaking Bad is so insufferable in every role she's in.

Yeah, he's incredibly unbelievable to me as the role he's playing. Even his overacting brother is more believable to me. Shrug.

That said, I thought the first episode of this season was great.

I'd say it was only slow in the context of 8 episodes to done. I liked the view into Nucky's childhood, and how it helped form the present.

Agreed, seemed a bit off for an opener of a show that's been fantastic in my opinion.

Great writing/directing/acting in the fist two episodes, IMHO.

Gretchen Mol headlights are on full beam in the second episode. :thumbsup:
