My 34 year old wife underwent a bilateral mastecomy a month and a half ago. She noticed a lump just before I returned from Afghanistan. We hoped that it would be fibroid in nature but after undergoing numerous attempts at biopsy a phone call from the surgeon crushed us.

The biopsy showed the tumor was cancerous with indications of lymph involvement (officially stage 2 breast cancer). She immediately opted for mastectomy. There was little consternation regarding the loss of her breasts because she would do anything to live as long as she could for our daughter. She flatly told the surgeon that she would never seek breast reconstruction.

During the mastectomy the breast surgeon found no lymph involvement at all and we are elated. The tumor was excised and all the tissue surrounding the tumor showed no signs of cancer per pathology. The tumor had likely been growing for the last 4-5 years.

Some may ask, "But why both breasts?" My wife didn't want to ever undergo that rollercoaster of dread again. She underwent surgery once and doesn't have to worry about, 'what if'. We'll probably get prosthesis soon, not that she's concerned about boobs. It's really just for bathing suits as she's fine just getting clothing that camouflages the absence of her breasts. We'll look for some prosthesis around the size when she was pregnant. I occasionally quip that I'll 'geek' a pair out with some flashing LEDs. We'll call those her 'party' breasts.

Our nephew sold some nylon cord bracelets with proceeds going towards my wife. He came over to give her $10 that he generated. My wife is looking for sponsors for a breast cancer walk in 2 weeks. Maybe I'll post details. Maybe if she posts her pre-mastectomy pics she'll get more donations.

It's called pinkwashing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_G._Komen_for_the_Cure#Pinkwashing_in_cause_marketing

It benefits the companies more than the charity. That's why you see it all over the place. It has lost all of its original meaning and is now just another symbol for greed.

Bingo.

I'm also tired of hearing about the need for "awareness." I'm glad that things have changed compared to several decades ago when cancer was considered almost a shameful secret and was only talked about euphemistically. At this point we're all aware of breast cancer though. Even encouraging mammograms might not do that much good. More awareness is a waste of time and money, what's really needed is more research on treatments. The percentage of Susan G Komen's money that goes to research is pitifully small.

Nut cancer has a better ring to it and would get my support.

I did a blue balls event once on twitter. I got a few dozen people to change their profile pick to a blue ball in support of testicular cancer. I posted all sorts of facts on testicular cancer for a month.

It REALLY pissed off a bunch of people. (which kinda was the point I was trying to make). I got sick of all the 'post your bra', awareness week, month, year, day, etc.

Turns out there is a ball cancer week (Apr 1-7). Also ball cancer is completely curable, just cut off your balls. Seems this answer is perfectly ok if it's your balls, not so much if it's your boobs....

I'm 100% against awareness, it's why I refuse to donate to all those pink ribbon robbers. I want to donate 100% to research. If you are not doing science, your not doing anything.

Awareness campaigns had a purpose back in the day when cancer was considered a dirty secret to be hidden. Nowadays they're a waste of time.

I agree. Its gone too far now. Its all about making others feel guilty enough to contribute to pay giant salaries of fundraisers and just to sell more items to the public. They can never find a cure, otherwise they would have to go find another job.

it annoys me as well, not because Cancer awareness is bad but breast cancer gets the spotlight and other forms get shafted

honestly id LOVE to see prostate or testicular cancer get HUGE PR campaigns like breast cancer does, see all the NFL player running around with flesh colored nuts on their uniforms and whatnot

Well I'm surprised no one has mentioned it buy October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It will all disappear in a couple of weeks. Beyond that, I'm sure it is a huge marketing ploy or they wouldn't be doing it. I bet they make a ton of money selling pink shit this month when they see everyone on tv wearing it, as well as draw in more female viewers to the games themselves.

How could that piss people off? Was it angry man-hating feminists getting upset or white knighters or what?

But Breast Cancer does get a huge chunk of the cash, while the more deadly cancers get shit. Apparently it is because more people survive breast cancer and they become advocates.

Breast cancer didn't used to be as treatable as it is today, and a large part of why the survival rate is so great now is because (A)research has led to better treatment, and (B)awareness has led to better and earlier screening.

I agree that the funding levels are now a little lopsided as a result, and more money should start being allocated to other cancers.
