I wonder, if this GPU has 800SPs, like the HD4850 does, would this GPU likewise have strong DP performance for MW@H?

MW@H requires double-precision floating-point capability which, unfortunately, this card lacks. DP performance used to be reserved for the high end GPUs, but that feature is now enabled on all of the current Rx 300 series cards.

The Wikipedia page for AMD GPUs lists the single and double precision capability of every card : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

I've got a board with four PCI-E slots here. Could make an interesting MW@H cruncher.
I think you can get the most bang for your buck with used 7950/7970s. They've been going for $90-120 on /r/hardwareswap.

P.S. Regarding Power Color rebates, be very careful how the form is filled out. They have some very detailed instructions that need to be followed (example: do not mistakenly use Newegg's "Order details" as the invoice) , but so far my experience with the single rebate I have filed has been good. It only took me about 5 1/2 weeks to receive my rebate and it was in the form of an actual check rather than a reward card. (EDIT: I just filled out a new Power color rebate yesterday (9/22/2015). They are now using 4myrebate, so same procedure as most other rebates......but now we get a reward card instead of a rebate check)

A few days ago, I did receive my rebate for the Power color HD5450 I mentioned above.

So that was pretty quick.

XFX HD6450, $19.99 AR free shipping:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150766&ignorebbr=1

$10 rebate expires on 5/30/2016 and must be postmarked within 30 days of purchase.

One reason to buy this rather than the Power Color HD5450 (that normally goes on sale for $9.99 AR free shipping) is if you want a card that has a true single slot height cooler (Power Color HD5450's new cooler is a bit taller than a single slot) and you want DVI-I rather than DVI-D.

P.S. Either the Power Color HD5450 or this HD6450 will allow the viewing and recording of DRM protected Cable TV content when a using device like Silicon Dust HDHomeRun Prime with Windows Media Center (found in Windows 7). This cannot be done with the Stock Core 2 duo iGPU.

Another low priced HTPC card to look at is the Nvidia GT 710 (which appears to be pushing the price of the HD6450 and R5 230s down a bit).

ASUS GT 710, $28.99 AR plus $2.99 shipping:

$10 rebate expires 5/31/2016 and must be postmarked within 30 days of purchase. Limit 2 rebates per household.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126053&ignorebbr=1

Compared to the Power Color HD5450 and XFX HD6450 this one has a more powerful core and higher bandwidth (however, for playback of videos this extra performance is not necessary).

Bandwith comparison:

Power color HD5450 = 64 bit DDR3 800
XFX HD6450 = 64 bit GDDR3 1066
ASUS GT 710= 64 bit GDDR3 1800

The XFX HD6450 and the PowerColor HD5450 linked above are now both on sale again.

Although the $19.99 AR ASUS GT710 Virtual Larry linked in post #189 is definitely faster (and a newer design) than the $19.99 AR XFX HD6450 it is not true single slot design and doesn't have DVI-I. With that mentioned, if your computer can use the GT710 I would definitely take that one over the HD6450.

P.S. I noticed there is now a listing for a true single slot Power Color HD5450 (ie, it has the old/orginal cooler on it) for $14.99 AR --> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131585

Another sale on the XFX HD6450 and the single slot cooler Power color HD5450 (from the end of the second quote above)

I suppose we could now say the consistent order for progression from cheapest to more expensive goes HD5450--> HD6450-->GT710 for the most entry level category of low profile discrete cards. In between this and the PNY GT730 GDDR5 is a basically a void.

With the information in post #192 noted, I wonder what the next heavily discounted low profile older model video card will be?

My guess would be either a Power Color R7 240 DDR3 or a XFX R7 240 DDR3.

However, when taking a look at the Power color website I notice their low profile R7 240 is only listed with a 64 bit memory interface (normal is 128 bit) and 600 Mhz core clock (normal is 720 Mhz/780 Mhz):

http://www.powercolor.com/Global/products_features.asp?id=554

^^^^ If that one ends up being priced right it still works for me (though I would obviously like to see them release either a passively cooled one or one with the full 128 bit memory spec and engine clock).

XFX R7 240 low profile has the full spec for all low profile models:

http://xfxforce.com/en-us/products/amd-radeon-r7-200-series#240

P.S. Current XFX R7 240 2GB (with fan) is $54.99 AR FS, but I have seen it on sale in the past for $39.99 AR FS.

With regard to the Power Color R7 240 with 64 bit interface, I was surprised to find out there is a separate smaller die for mobile that has 64 bit rather than 128 bit memory bus. It measures 77mm2 vs. 90mm2 for the 128 bit version.

Examples:

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2851/radeon-r7-m440 (R7 M440, 320sp with 64 bit DDR3, 77mm2 on 28nm)

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2463/radeon-r7-240 (R7 240, 320sp with 128 bit DDR3, 90mm2 on 28nm)

EDIT: Actually there are appears to be a 128 bit die at 77mm2 as well--> https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2854/radeon-r7-m465

I wonder what is going on here? Could it be these different sizes because they are fabbed at different places? TSMC vs. GF?

I think that they should bring back a 14nm R7 260X 2GB card. Maybe the RX 460 will be the equivalent.

I've just played with VSR, and now I can watch 1440P videos on YouTube on my 1920x1080 monitor. Amazing stuff.

A cheap card that could do 4K or 1440P VSR, on a 1080P or maybe even 720P HDTV, would be great for media-watching.

Edit: Reminds me of the olden days, whereas some ATI-chipset video cards had a TV-out port, that could drive 1024x800 over S-Video.

Virtual Larry,

Looking at the list of cards supported for VSR I noticed A6-7400K or better APU is listed.

http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/technologies-gaming/vsr

Available on the following products: AMD Radeon™ R9 Fury X GPU, AMD Radeon™ R9 300 Series, AMD Radeon™ R7 300 Series, AMD Radeon™ R7 260 and above GPUs, AMD Radeon™ HD 7900 Series, AMD Radeon™ HD 7800 Series, AMD Radeon™ HD 7790, and AMD A-Series APUs (A6 7400K and higher)

So I wonder if support would eventually come to the R7 240 and R7 250 cards as well?
