Higherground -
Just because you can post with your 1.6a @ 2.4ghz (150FSB) with default voltage doesn't mean a lot. I can do the same with my P41.6a. I can post at 160FSB with 4:5 ratio, but I sure as hell can't boot into WinXP at that setting.

I ment booting to Windows and running Prime without errors, but that was with 1:1 mem ratio. I spent last 30-40 minutes ramping up FSB with 4:5 ratio while burning the memory, which to my suprise is working as I'm posting this @150 FSB with memory running @ 375Mhz DDR ( by SPD ), something I know I couldn't do yesterday.

It's my first time, be gentle

I've been an AMD man for the past three years, so excuse me when I say that going back to Intel feels a little weird. However, these 1.6a gems seem too good to pass up. After searching around elsewhere, I decided to go with a 1.6a, 4G4a+, and two 256 sticks of crucial 2700. I ordered last week, and then someone pointed me to this board, and I found this gigantic thread. I took the time to read through it, and I was a bit disconcerted...

From what I gather, people seem to have the best experience with the Samsung ram. My question is, what happened to crucial?? From what I've seen, they've always been one of the highest quality manufacturers...."if you need ram, you get crucial" type of thing. However, I've seen it mentioned maybe once in this entire thread! Has their level of performance and reliability bit the dust when I wasn't looking?

Also, this whole deal with different ram slots is very upsetting. I was aware of the fact that banks 2 and 3 are shared, and therefore your options are limited if you really want to use all the slots. But I never heard of problems with using both 1+2 before I came here...seems really retarded that you are forced to buy one stick. I would never be comfortable having only 1 of 512, for instance....if it tanks, you're screwed. With 2, if one fails at least you can still run your comp!

Anyway, I'll stop rambling. I guess I'm just wondering if there are any fellow crucial supporters left out there....and if I'll need to start looking for different ram :frown:

senway, after reading this post, I'd say if you want a nice OC, 2 sticks of RAM is just fine. But if you want the BEST OC, only 1 stick is gonna do it. Maybe this is something a BIOS update can fix. Until then, I'm getting my sights set on a single 512MB stick. I just ran p95 for 28 hours stable at 2.3 gigs. I've had this CPU higher, so I have no qualms about changing up the RAM to keep it stable higher

I'm still a Crucial fan. They make good, reliable ram. I've noticed over the years that Anandtech has its fads and fans. People tend to be bandwagon supporters and love hype. Almost any ram will be fine when run at spec. Around here though someone posts about an amazing overclock with some particular ram and suddenly everyone starts repeating the story, even if they can't repeat the OC. But the memory did do something for someone and that makes for good hype. If you told some people around here that rubbing a stick of memory from Bud's House of Ram on your crotch made your system OC to 3GHz, some people would treat it as gospel.

Corsair XMS pc3200 512 stick
Aopen H600a case with 300watt power
Aopen 16X dvd
Cyberdrive 32X12X48 CD/RW
Seagate 60gig 7200
Geforce 2 GTS PRO
All stock Cooling!!!!!!!!!!!

My maximum result was:-

2.82 gig
Ram at 352DDR at cas 2 (2,5,2,2 mem timings)
I got Sisoft mem scores of 2743, 2738
I got Sisoft Processor scores of Dhrystone ALU 6170 MIPS
Whetstone FPU/SSE2 1472/3459 MFLOPS
Unfortunately 3dmark 2001se would stuff up!

But at 2.76 gig it was totally stable!

I will post all the results shortly!
Including 3dmark 2001se and pcMark2002

Here are the results!

My results at 2.76gig were:-

fsb 138
Ram at 245DDR at cas 2 (2,5,2,2 mem timings)
I got Sisoft mem scores of 2685, 2682
I got Sisoft Processor scores of Dhrystone ALU 5685 MIPS
Whetstone FPU/SSE2 1441/3379 MFLOPS
3dmark 2001se was only 4737 at 1024X768X32, not to bad for a geforce 2 GTS PRO

pcMark2002 CPU score 6747
MEM score 6253
Hard score 817

As you can see I really need a better Vid card desperately, but at least it thrashes the onboard graphics.

Samsung RAM overclocks better -- remember the spec is *only* 333 MHz. Do a search, I think there was a review at Sharky's of different RAM modules and their overclocking ability.

Somone in another thread pointed out the orientation of the HS/F.... IMHO, the whole RAM slot 1 vs. slot 2 issue has to do with hot air from the heatsink. Notice how the stock HS/F directs hot air on to your ram. Slot 2 is a little further back and might not be as prone to the effect of hot air exiting the HS/F.

EDIT

DDR roundup was at VR-Zone. This AT thread has links to more reviews.

Here is what it will do with puny Crucial PC2100. This is 1 stick of 256 mb DS. Every setting is max out except for CAS, it is set at 2.5. USB, LAN, Raid and onboard sound work great. Haven't installed the
drivers for USB 2.0 but I will very soon. Here are the results at 160 FSB using a 2.26B chip running at 2.72G. Memory timing 4:5 so DDR is at 400. AGP bus@80mhz and PCI bus@40mhz:

SANDRA CPU

SANDRA SSE2

SANDRA MEM

SANDRA L2 CACHE

3D2001SE

AND, Samsung PC2700 (DTL stuff) worked very good with this board; up to 164 FSB with 2 sticks of 512mb!

Anyone want to walk me through installing the USB 2.0 drivers?

I found some ass-backwards .doc that explains downloading files from MS and intel?

I have not tryed it because I don't have any 2.0 devices and I'm
planning on doing a clean install of XP pro when I get my video card.

Just received my 4g4a+ from mwave yesterday and had been playing with it all night last night, turned out to be a nightmare.

This is a new MB for my 1.6a which used to sit in my old MSI 645Ultra.

In my old setup, I used a stick of 256 crucial pc2100 ram, with a generic 400W PS, voltage mod to 1.7v and was able to overclock to 2400mhz (150fsb) with 4:5 settings to get DDR 374 on the crucial ram. I also have an Iwill Raid 100 raiding two 80gb Western Digital 7200rpm HD and a ATI AIW Radeon 32mb ddr.

However, with my 4g4a+, I used all the same components as my previous setup, using the on-board hpt 372 controller, but encountered many problems.

First, I encounter a non XP compliance warning during Windows XP installation. After I chose "continue anyways" and finish the installation process, my computer couldn't load into windows, freezing right at the "welcome" screen. Finally found the problem might be the Video Card, and my ATI AIW Radeon doesn't seem to work with this board. It loads to windows successfully if I just enable the on-board graphics and uninstall the ATI AIW Radeon, so I replaced it with my brother's Gainward G4 4200, and it works fine.

Then, I started OCing. Since my old setup brought my 1.6a to 2.4 and my crucial ddr266 to ddr374, I expected no less. I put my crucial ram in the 2nd slot as suggested by others. I am using the Intel stock fan with AS3 applied, with 1 120mm intake and 1 120mm exhaust fan. Temp seems to be ok at around 35-37 idle for the cpu and low 30s for system. I locked the AGP/PCI, And then...

FSB133, mem 1:1 @ DDR 266, default voltages -- boot, windows, OK

But,
FSB 150, mem 1:1 @ DDR 333, default voltages - boot, freezes before windows finish loading
FSB 150, mem 1:1 @ DDR 333, core 1.6v - boot, freezes before windows finish loading
FSB 150, mem 1:1 @ DDR 333, core 1.7v, mem 2.7v - boot, load to windows, start to get errors, screen starts to get artifacts, freezes
FSB 150, mem 1:1 @ DDR 333, core 1.75v, mem 2.7v - boot, load to windows, start to get errors, screen starts to get artifacts, freezes

Then, i tried to lower my FSB down to 145, but still, no luck.

So now, I am a little concered as to what the problem is. Did I get a defective board since I still can't find out why (and can't find similar problems in this thread and other forums) about my ati aiw radeon not working with the board, I tried the board in another computer, and it was fine.

Does anybody have similar problems?

Or could it be my generic 400 W PS?
Or could it be that the board doesn't like my crucial ram? I just ordered some Corsair xms pc3200, should I try with those ram before I rma it.
Or could it be something else?

Thanks in advance for any help/recommendation

Pepsimanz - What about the 4:5 ratio? Your post said you tested all those speeds/voltages at 1:1. Try 4:5 at 133FSB, default vcore and 2.6 Vmem. If that works then try 145FSB, 1.6Vcore, 2.7Vmem.

Mine was running great at 145 FSB for the past week, but my roommate just called to say that my PC was beeping over and over again. Doh! I'll find out whats up when I get home.

Good luck

pepsimanz, Do you have more info on the "non XP compliance warning"? What do you think caused the error?

I got the same thing. I figured it was one of the integrated pieces that never went through WHQL.

I'm having trouble getting the onboard audio to work...

All four channels test fine when I set it up under WinXP using the config util provided, but when I listen to music or any other output, only the front channel is produced.

Any ideas? I enabled it in bios.

Thanks-

Johnnychangs:

would it make a difference if I use 1:1 instead of 4:5? I will try it tonight and post my results.

anazoal:
The "non XP compliance" poped up half way through the installation after it copies all the necessary files from the CD. Usually, "non XP compliance warning" would indicate the device that is incompliance, but the warning I got didn't say what it was. The first time I got this error, I click "continue anyways" and my system restarted itself and had to install again. However, the second time around, after I "continue anyways", the installation process seems fine. It is not till it first boot up to windows, when it freezes right after the "welcome" screen.

I am suspecting it to be my ATI AIW Radeon 32mb ddr graphics card, because after I removed the video card (w/o installing windows again) , I was able to pass the "welcome" screen, using the on-board graphics and using a gf4 4200.

I will try to disable on-board LAN, on-board audio, on-board graphics, and do a clean install again tonight with 4:5 mem ratio (as suggested by johnnychangs) with my GF4 4200 and see if it still shows the same problem and hope for a better OC.

pepsimanz, I installed win XP without a hitch using onboard graphics. I am using the Highpoint controller as 2 extra IDE chanels for my HD's and placed each of my DVD and CDRW on its own IDE chanel on the regular controller.

At the begining of the installation let WinXP install drivers from diskette for the Highpoint controller (I think the prompt said press F2 for SCSI/RAID controllers). AFter installing XP, follow the instructions (posted 10-20 posts earlier in this thread) on how to install the INF + other drivers.

Update

I tried to clean install win xp again last night, diabling all on-board sound, graphics, nic, still get the same "Non-xp compliance error", bypassed by clicking continue as is, finished installing, cannot boot to windows .

Next, clean install win xp again using on the the on-board graphics, no agp video card, still get the same "Non-xp compliance error", this time, I tried to "Not install" the software, finished installing, still cannot boot to windows.

Finally, clean install win 2000, no error during installing, cannot boot to windows after installation, get the blue screen while it's loading.

Now, all of the above were done Non-overclocked, tried both 1:1 and 4:5 mem ratio, AGP/PCI locked to 66/33, so I am concluding that this is just a bad board, so I am RMAing it today, hopefully, my replacement will get better.

Have you tried a bios flash? And, just make sure you are not caching anything like System bios or Video. if you do have any drives attached to the HPT372 chipset then set the Latency to 192 or 224.

Also, the Crucial stuff loves voltage and it sounds like you need more Vmem for the Crucial or whatever you have in there now. Put at least 3.0-3.2 for Vmem and at least 1.75 for Vcore. If the above suggestions and the higher voltage doesn't do it then I would agree that board is bad. Good luck.

I'm having the exact same problem with my AIW Radeon. It will boot in safe mode, but freezes otherwise. I've tried all the previous fixes with voltage, mem in the second slot, etc. Anyone have any ideas? I would appreciate it.

Have you increased the AGP voltage? I've used an MMX2, ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon and then a 128mb All-in-Wonder R8500. All worked well. If the AGP voltage increase, Vmem increase and Vcore increase doesn't do it, then it is time to RMA.

What bios date are you using anyway?
