The Federation vs The Republic?

Ok, this isn't the normal debate of "Would the enterprise beat a star destroyer." This is something else. One of the things that's not gone into very much in any of the Star Trek series is that the Federation has a standing army. However, the Federation choses not to use that army unless it absolutely has to as a last resort. However, the Republic (Clone wars period) also has its own standing army of clone warriors.

Now, if the two of them got into a ground war, who would win? The federation ground troops, or the republic clone troops?

Anyways, I think it would be more of a stalemate. The Federation has the tech advantage, but the Republic has sheer #'s on their side.

The Empire would kick the Federation's ass. The Empire has thousands ships, and a tremendous amount of firepower. The Federation has a really small, wimpy military, as proven by the fact that the Enterprise is always the "only ship in the quadrant" that can save the day. How many fricken times is the Enterprise the only ship around?

You ever consider that maybe that's because the show centers around the Enterprise? How do you know that other ships don't have as much encounters as the Enterprise?

StarFleet was not commissioned as a military force. over the years it has taken on that assignment.
If you watched TNG, how many military vessels allow civilians and children onboard long term??

StarFleet does have a Marine force for planetside warfare.

Starfleet is NOT the military. Picard has said in a few episodes that Starfleet is there for exploration, not military endeavors.

Also, in the Enterprise TV show time, Enterprise is the only Starfleet vessel to go out as far as it has, as it has the newest fastest engine in it. Plus i think it is the only Starfleet vessel so far, all the other human ships are civilian owned and operated transports.

Against ground forces I think Star Trek has the upperhand. Why? Transporters. They could just transport the enemy soldiers 1000 feet above their current location. How many clones can survive a 1000 foot free fall?

Enterprise is an explorer ship. That's why it's the only one around.

Star Trek has immense weapons (such as subspace weapons, which would swallow your irrelevant death star, cloaking devices which allow a ship to pass through anything solid, Borg, Species 8472, tricobal devices, ablative armor, transphasic torpedos, genesis device, etc). The Empire relies on huge, massive ships to own anything in it's path. All it takes is a tiny ship to fire a subspace warhead far far away, or detonate a subspace weapon right in front of it causing the ship to get sucked in.
