Pretty accurate...but it would be better if they didn't use a high school looking kid for the part.

I have to agree with the hidden fees BS. Signed up for DirecTV primarily due to Sunday Ticket (NFL). Seemed to suggest I'd be at under $50 a month for basic HD programming.

Now, 4 months later, I'm paying $81.92. I was under the impression that I'd be paying roughly $600 per year for all sorts of programming vs. just getting Sunday Ticket on the PS3 via the Internet for $299. Now that figure is much closer to 1000 per year. And half of the shit on there isn't worth watching.

I've told myself prior that it just wasn't worth $80+ a month, so I canceled and did the netflix/hulu/ota thing and was pretty happy. But when I saw that I could get it for roughly $50 a month with Sunday Ticket included, I happily signed up. Now, I'm less than thrilled with the extra shit they're adding onto my bill.

I'm sure calling will have no net effect, but what can you do.

No way i'd pay for Google Fiber. To me 40/15 is more than enough. What are you downloading that needs a Gig a second?

I call my cable TV company up every year now to demand a discount. I usually get at least 20% off, and sometimes 30% off... which means the non-complainers are by default always going to pay more.

BTW... For DSL, I'm paying for regular ADSL, but have VDSL2 service. I had a cheap high speed VDSL2 account years ago from a promotion. After the promotion was over I switched back to regular DSL, but they never changed my hardware profile. So I quickly and ran out and bought a VDSL2 modem and have been at the same VDSL2 speed (max for my area) ever since. However, since then the Canadian pricing for VDSL2 has dropped dramatically in this area to what it should be - decent rates - because of some rulings by the governing bodies. Before the recent drop, the VDSL2 pricing was ridiculous, because the VDSL2 providers could get away with it.

Every year? So eventually you'll be paying nearly nothing?

No. 20-30% off full retail price. Every time I call in they say they can give me a discount, but will only guarantee it for a year... hoping that after a year I won't bother complaining again.

I used to also call in to get discounts for my cell phone, but since then I managed to get in on an excellent Xmas promotion. So, my current cell phone plan is a true retail plan, not some negotiated discounted plan. Ironically, they screwed up on that too and gave me that plan along with the $10 credit I used to have. They forgot to remove the credit but I suspect that credit will disappear after 2 years.

So, currently I'm paying CAD$46 per month ($56 - $10) for unlimited voice, unlimited long distance in Canada, no roaming costs, unlimited local and international SMS and MMS, and 2 GB data. I know someone who is paying $100 for 500 minutes of voice, limited long distance, and 6 GB data... because he can't be bothered to complain.

Charter (TWC) is pretty horrible in customer service and their tech support sucks ass.

I like my Verizon FiOS services, I just hate the god damn customer service. They went from Indian accent, which I can at least make out, to African accent, which I can't make out a word they say. Fuck. Calling them today to inquire about my bill. I wonder if I can just go to a Verizon store and get an answer instead of going through the phone.

Not so much about downloading but what you can upload. With such a high speed connection you could host everything at home and save money in server/hosting costs. Heck, even host other servers/sites for people. I'd probably start a mini dedicated server company if I had access to bandwidth like that. Cooling, power backup etc is trivial for a small setup.

Yep, that's what home startups are doing in Kansas City.

Is what it is. Just cancel if you don't like it.

I would love to cancel if there was another provider at my apt complex. I have TWC or AT&T. AT&T has caps that I would eclipse. Plus they are more expensive for slower speed than TWC oddly enough. At least my service has been stable. No outages in 9 months now. *knocks on wood

Right now they have 5Mbps service for 25$ a month for the first year (or $300 up front) and guaranteed free for the next 6 years after that.

the whole industry is based on charging byte for byte all the way down the chain, when it should be based on equipment and running costs like the normal world.
