Dude, texashiker, at least MeowKat has the excuse that he's a troll.

Wat?

Your insolence can no longer be tolerated. Furthermore, Tex & I have proven without a doubt that this is merely hysteria and must be treated as such.

I weep for the future of humanity, the level of stupidity displayed in this thread is astounding. Even more so when you factor in that this is a tech board and presumably frequented by people who have a little better understanding of science and technology than the average person.

In my observation, health literacy is unrelated to any other type of literacy.

Tex is just really, really, really stupid.

You're giving him too much credit, Fausto.

As for this thread, the OP reads just like his "Sandy hype is overblown" thread......just another thread of pure ignorance from someone who appears to be a child.

I never created any such thread. Your hyperbole is amazing, astounding and absurd. I gave Sandy all due caution and diligence required.

If you want to be critical at least be accurate.

Accurate critcism: You continue to be a terrible example of a Christian, despite being perhaps the most vocal religious person on this board. If I were a spiritual person, I'd say your myriad health problems, poverty, and social isolation are karmic payback for being such an unrelenting, hypocritical, judgemental douchebag.

There is a fundamental difference between the genetic make up of the flu and the other viruses you listed. The flu is an RNA virus which is prone to mutation and so changes from year to year. Smallpox and some types of Hep are DNA based making them more stable with a much lower rate of genetic change from generation to generation.

The stability of these DNA based viruses helps in creating vaccines. They are effective but only until the virus changes enough to over come it. In the case of Smallpox, we were able to vaccinate a majority of the world fast enough before the virus was able to mutate enough to render it ineffective. This is how it was wiped out.

Again, science isn't your strong point.

It's not RNA vs. DNA that makes flu change so rapidly. It's segmented vs. non-segmented and the vast animal host pool (chickens, pigs and more) available to flu. Plus a few other things.

Are you going to tell me viruses like polio, HepA, HepB, noro and small pox can not adapt like what TB and gonorrhea can?

Influenza evolves much faster than any of these, and spreads faster too.

If we can wipe small pox out, why cant we wipe the flu out.

The animal reservoir is one big reason. Its ability to mutate extremely quickly is another.

Well, there is one reason not to wipe flu out, and that reason is profits.

This explanation (for any disease) rarely holds up to even cursory examination because so much research is done by non-profits. There's a lot of research going into how to make universal vaccines, with at least three avenues of approach.

Could we imagine the horror if we had a "real" flu vaccine that lasted 10, 15 20 years?

The reduced effectiveness of the whooping cough vaccine shows there is a line between profits and effectiveness the drug companies wish to maintain.

Then there are the occasional mumps outbreaks, which have occurred in fully vaccinated students. The result of the outbreak, the government called for booster shots.

What was the result of the California pertussis outbreak? The government is considering booster shots. But then again, why not revert to a stronger vaccine?

A primary plus a booster is often (usually) more effective than a single, larger dose. Probably less susceptible to side effects, and maybe even cheaper in terms of dosage sparing.

Like I said before, its a good thing we had people who put public health over profits working on the small pox and polio vaccine.

Again, there's lots and lots of non-profit research going into influenza vaccines, with the universal vaccine being the holy grail.

Tex is just really, really, really stupid.

If questioning the status quo is stupid, then so be it.

The original shot killed some people. The best vaccines are those with the best effectiveness and the least side effects. New shot with boosters is effective and doesn't kill people.

6 of one, half dozen of the other.

The oral polio vaccine was given for decades, which in some cases gave people polio.

It was not until the late 1990s that the US government finally abandoned to oral vaccine. But the oral vaccine is still given throughout the developing world.

I'm fine with questioning.

It's questioning, getting your ass absolutely handed to you over and over, and coming back for more that classifies you as "really, really, really stupid".

All I see is people repeating what they have been told: RNA viruses mutate faster, so there will never be a universal, or long lasting vaccine.

I call BS on that. Not on the mutation part, but on the "its out of our reach" part.

With so many advances behind humanity, why cant we find a cure for the common virus? Not just a vaccine, but a cure.

The issue isn't that we can never find a cure, the issue is that we don't have a cure right now and we won't for some time. It's simply beyond our reach at the present, no matter how much money we throw at it.

TH: glad to see that it appears that you are "on the mend" and have things in your life straightened out.

The craziness has been absent for some time now, so your return to the paranoia and anti-vaccine crusade tells me that everything is back in order with you.

GL, there.

This is why you fix the printers at work and other (read: smart) people work in the field of immunology.

This goes back to the greed issue, how much money is enough? As wall street has proven time and time again, there will never be enough money.

I am not anti-vaccine, but I am pro-knowledge.

I do not "fix" the printers here. If they break, they get replaced.

No, you're not. If you were pro-knowledge you'd have learned something from the innumerable times people here have ripped apart your theories on vaccines. You are, as has been pointed out, willfully ignorant.

So, because we don't have these things yet, you see profit-minded conspiracies?

Seriously?

We as a species have made significant advances, but there is still SO MUCH out of reach just yet. There are some things you can even say "we don't know that we don't know it yet" because we're just so ignorant of the necessary information, because we either haven't found it yet or can't see the bigger picture.

What you're really arguing is essentially like: "with all of our advances, why don't we have rocket engines that can travel at the speed of light! I mean, we know so much, it can't honestly be out of our reach!"

There are a billion medicinal advances we have yet to make, but are either working on or trying to figure out how to work on. There's also the funding aspect, and thus, certain big puzzles get the attention first before we move on to others.
As was already stated, research is well underway for such a universal vaccine for influenza, as well as cures/vaccines for various viruses. You seem to not grasp how significant of a challenge biological research tends to be. We as a species cannot just will into existence a cure-all just because we dreamed it up the night before.

I mean hell, why do you think we have something like Folding@Home? Is it just because they want to waste computer resources and power, and, omg, I got it: it's a coalition to ensure we continue to draw more energy from the grid than we really need, so we can stuff the pockets of the electric company execs!

Who said "never?"

And again, it's not the RNA vs. DNA part that makes influenza evolve so quickly.

Polio is an RNA virus and doesn't evolve nearly as fast as influenza does.

With so many advances behind humanity, why cant we find a cure for the common virus? Not just a vaccine, but a cure.

If it's so easy, and it matters so much to you, why don't you get a degree in the field, do the research, and invent the cure yourself? A true cure for common viral infections will make you a millionaire many times over.

Yes, I think our greed holds society back.

I never said it was easy.
