I did a quick search at SilentPCReview and the Zalman VF900 comes highly recommended. Although, some people mod the fan to make it even quieter.

The Egg has a sale on it right now.

There is another cooler just released by Thermalright HR-03, but not readily available yet.

Now for my question.
How are the x1600 cards working? Will the AGP version work?

I ask because I have an Athalon 64 3000+ on socket 754. I'm wondering, if I can pick up a X1600 agp for $50 or so, would I get much better results?

I do plan to upgrade to either an e6400 or an Opteron 165 at the first of the year. At that time, I would get an x1950pro.

I think I'll convince my wife that the old computer needs to be a file server for backup. As long as it is in the closet, she wont care

Chris, Thankyou very much for the link. I was considering the Zalman VF900, It'd be nice, but, hmm...30 dollars + shipping and handling for a fan? I'm acting really cheap, but i'm not sure. Perhaps if i grab an eclipse 1 for 30ish instead of 50 then I'll do it. Hmm hmm...Thanks again, links are almost as great as cookies. I'm not overclocking or anything but having a quieter fan would be nice. Is it difficult to install? I'll not be modding hehe but I've only put together my own build once. I heard you from a newegg review you have to be careful with the screws. In anycase perhaps this post isnt the right place if you could pm me if you know the two perhaps then it'd be appreciated. In anycase it's still very much appreciated for the information.

the x1600 will net you b/t 150 and 200 PPD. IMHO, if you have the money and it is worth it to you, I would wait a bit and get the x1950pro apg version to run on your 754. should get around 600+ PPD. it should be around $200.

the x1600 would just use more electricity and not really give you a PPD increase. Just my humble opinion though...

Don't know if this question has been asked, but here goes:

I have a Radeon X300 card. Yes, this will not work, but I am interested in upgrading it to one of the bigger cards if it is worth my while. Here I mean the following. I am not a big gamer, but BIG into DC. Would it be more cost effective to slip in a PCI-e X19xx card or buy a motherboard and CPU? I run my machines as basic as possible - no monitor, case, etc, just the bare bones.

Would I be getting the same credits (or more) for the equivalent of a new CPU?

I really like this new beta. Is it me or does it run much better?

For instance, i used to receive slight lag while playing my favorite Java-based game (Mm...Thankyou procrasination) and having the gpu client running. Now, i dont ^_^ Getting about 30minutes -2 hours more daily hehe...

And this i know *must* be my imagination but it's quieter :/ I'm just confused I'm sure.

update on drivers...

Kinslayer: i didn't see your comment before but personally i didn't notice much of a difference, but I have it in a dedicated folding machine so I don't pay much attention to it

depending on your clock speeds, between 450 and 515 PPD. not too shabby for 135 bucks
