the ford mazda situation

who knows the situation between the two companies? i have heard that the two companies have made a joint venture. i have also heard that ford had bought our mazda which is true?

Ford owns about 1/3 of Mazda, but really controls Mazda's whole operation. They're beginning to interchange drivetrains. i.e. the new 2003 Mazda 6 is going to have a modified V6 option of Ford's Duratec engine.

Wow, you're way behind the times! Ford has owned a substantial part of Mazda for some time now...as far as joint ventures, witness the Ford Explorer/Mazda Navajo...the Ford Ranger/Mazda pickup..etc.

Good point. The joint venture between the 2 companies is old hat. The investment Ford made into Mazda has only made it official. I have no problem with it as long as Ford keeps their grubby fingers out of Mazda's design department. Just keep pumping out clean designs like the Miata, 6, and RX-8 and I'll be happy.

All the Probe's (89-97) were partly designed by Mazda. IIRC the Probe is roughly 50% Ford, 45% Mazda, 5% Mitsubishi.

I like the '94 Probe, best looking of Probe line. Its a GT with the V6 so it can pick 'em up and put 'em down. Sweet car, just wish it had a transformer button, so I could turn it into a pickup everyonce in a while!

The fact of the matter is that All big 3, own at least 10% shares of there rivials. Ford almost killed the upcoming RX-8, since Ford management didn't see a future in rotary engines. check out i think it, It was at walgreen mag section ( don't rememnber the mag)

In short Madza engineer argue w/ Ford management to contiune work on rotoary engines. Ford owns shares in the reatively new Daewoo.

The only thing i can is that Honda and Nissian are the only one left that don't "have joint ventures" with anyone.

Okay here is just an execept, but I don't consider it a joint venture, is when Honda Passport=Isuzi Rodeo, Honda Odessey= Isuzi Ossai , they just rebahged it.


What I think ford want to do is buy into every company and "steal/borrow" design/technological advances. They would also have the ability to choose
there board of directors, and therefore have inside info.


Here one example, of borrow technological advances. Honda VTEC engines, it can be found on all engines these days. Toyota VVT-I, Ford DoTECH, Nissian CVTC .......

I guess I should feel like a dolt then, I used to chuckle to myself whenever I saw this one purple Probe around town with a "Powered by Mazda" badge on the back. Maybe that bit of automotive knowledge actually offsets his extremely large wing and exhaust tip on that car.

nah, i still prefer the newly painted mx6.. sure, its only auto.. and the tranny is failing.. but it looks nice

Well I am glad that the rx8 is going thru, but in a lot of cases ford has made some good improvements in the company they buy into, such as jaguar.

lnguyen, I think that body style of MX6's are timeless. No matter how old they are, they still look awesome. Nearly 10 years old, and I personally think they are still one of the sharpest looking cars on the road. They still make me turn my head whenever I see one pass.

Mazda really had their designers in top form when they made that beauty. If they weren't prone to reliability problems and expensive repairs, I'd love to own one.

I had a 90 Probe LX almost identical to that one.


The Probe and MX6 are the same car. Probes are built by Mazda, in Flat Rock, Michigan.
