This forum speaks to some terrible system maintenance/management.

I've never seen larger forums, or even smaller forums, that require nightly maintenance downtime. Not only is that apparently insufficient, we then proceed to have entire days offline for "scheduled maintenance"... only to see site performance take significant nosedives which then require even more downtime to resolve.

I think they do the weekly maintenance for other reasons. I can't put my finger on what they are doing during that time, but I'm sure it involves mexican midgets.

yeah.. what I don't understand if they're moving locations is:
1) backup everything
2) load the backup to the new machines in the new location way b4 the move
3) test

if everything works, then on xfer day:
1) shutdown anandtech.com
2) backup everything
3) load the backup to the new machines at new location

You have no concept of how these things are done, do you? There are multiple issues with your "plan" above; I'll let you figure them out.

That downtime was actually fairly costly. And yeah, there's profit to be made in running 'free' Internet forums, especially in running them well.
