I saw the 2002 version last night and felt it was pretty good. I really enjoy military history and it was fascinating watching the British form up into a sqaure and fight off the enemy, especially when the camera panned overhead showing you the grand scale of the combatants rushing the square. One of the best, albeit brief, war scenes captured on camera in my opinion. Saturday night I saw Zulu again so I had my fill of 19th century British conflicts.

Anyone else like it? I noticed on IMDB there were several versions made but I hadn't ever heard of it until this weekend.

I saw the older version of it some time ago; thought it was pretty good. A better flick is Gallipoli or check out Breaker Morant which takes place duing the Boer War. Have you seen Shaka Zulu?

I saw it, it was pretty good. I don't recall being overly impressed by the battle scenes... give me Gettysburg any day.

Yes, I rank Gallipoli with Mel Gibson as one of my all time WWI favorites. I haven't heard of Breaker Morant nor Shaka Zulu but I will look them up after I post this. Thanks for the tips.

Mugs: Agreed except for the formation of the square I mentioned and the overhead shot there wasn't anything special about the battle scenes but I liked that particular one. I was never into Civil War history though, except I did love Glory and a few others that I cannot think of right now.

If you liked that movie then you should love Lawrence of Arabia

Fingolfin269: No doubt about that. I have it, still in the shrink wrap, but I am waiting to hook up my surround sound again (remodeling den) before I watch it although I've been tempted to give in and just watch it anyway.

puffff: Yes, I felt as with many movies, the timing of everything took quite a suspension of belief but I still found it a very enjoyable movie and I am glad I discovered it.

I thought overall it was boring and too slow moving. Some parts were good though, but like I said, overall it wasn't that great. Thanks for the suggestions of other movies though, I'll check some of them out.

Yes, I thought it was a bit slow sometimes too but even some of the most acclaimed pictures can drag on during some parts.

Oh, and for anyone who is interested this movie is playing on Showtime on Demand until August 3rd I think it was.

the book lays out the story along a much more extended timeline...the movie, like most novel-to-movies do, compresses the story...which makes it seem like the african guy is always there right at the right time...but that's not the way the book reads...

I love the movie...you have to like movies with a more artistic touch as opposed to action...suspense, blockbuster feel to enjoy it, though.

Very well made movie...great performances...decent period setting / set pieces...

How about Master and Commander - any of you posting here see that one? That's a great flick...
