As a fax user, somewhat in the middle of nowhere, and in an age of retirement, social security, and associated medical bullshit, my wife and I get endless requests to fax me this, fax me that, fax me the other damn thing. And on rare occasions my wife's part time job and other needs require me to receive incoming faxes. But either way, the instant gratification of
fax technology beats the speed and cost of snail mail or the gasoline to hand deliver the documents.
But three things to note here. (1) If I was just sending outgoing faxes, I would not need to feed ink to a rip off inkjet printer, most sheet feed and flatbed inkjet AOL with their own modems work fine with or without working cartridges. And even if I didn't already have two spares already, I could buy such used units at Goodwill stores all day long for $10.00 or so. (2) But as soon as I need incoming faxes, gasp, I need a working printer to print them. (3) I need a landline phone line to play the fax game. Back in the bad old days when dial up internet was my only internet option, I needed such a land line phone line to connect to the internet and would still LOOOOOOOVE my monopoly land line phone provider if they upgraded their lines to DSL capable. But sadly, AT&T ain't ever going to do that, so as I now get my internet from non-At&T EVDO, and already have cell phone options, I somewhat wait for that wondrous day when I can cheerfully say, FUCK YOU, AT&T, you are FIRED.
But But but wait, fax technology is all based on antique landline phone technology. And even if I take the technological lead, will the offices I have to send and receive faxes from
get with more modern technology or will I gave to retain my land line for the foreseeable future or shit can fax technology?
As it is I have a very nice all in one laser printer, capable of blazing fast whole G3 transmission speed of 33.6 Kbits/sec. Maybe in a whole year it costs me a whole $3.00 in long distance phone charges to send faxes which are mostly local, and incoming faxes are on their nickel. But with all the skype and VOIP options available why is fax technology not getting upgraded to modern potential?
