I know what the end game is for the current age of our technology in terms of 2d, panel based displays. It will be the following or very similar to it. I will list the reasons for why this is the perfect display until the next giant leap in technology comes along. In order to do better than this, you will need a fundamental change in digital viewing technology.

34"-38" diagonal
21:9
8k ultrawide
OLED
HDR
144+hz
Variable sync

The reason something like this will end up being standard are the following. 16:9 is going to die. Its the new 4:3. After using 16:9 for years and going 21:9, I realize that 16:9 is boxy and not ideal in terms of width. 21:9 is a good fit for the human eye layout and spacing. It makes sense.
34-38 inches is an ideal size. Its a good size to remain practical for desktop use while remaining ideally large for impact and immersion.
8k is ideal because 8k will have enough pixel density to allow the panel to operate at reduced resolutions with acceptably clear results during scaling. This will be like the good old days during the CRT era when you simply chose what resolution you wanted without much loss in quality. One 8k panel can do it all in terms of resolution choice. Of course during 8k use the image will be perfectly clear, almost like looking out a window rather than looking at a screen.
OLED and HDR benefits are obvious. No backlight bleed, perfect viewing angles, perfect contrast, perfect color reproduction and perfect response times. High refresh rates will make motion smoothness even better, thus 144hz being the expected minimum.
Variable sync will be expected for its benefits, whether they are subtle or not.

Your prediction of the death of 16:9 has no basis except that you like it. What is better does not matter. It matters what the industry goes with. This can be seen historically in the tech industry. Betamax vs VHS, HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray. Unless televisions switch to 21:9 that will not become the defacto monitor type. This is simply not going to happen in 4 years. Specifically because it means that all current content would not run full screen on the monitor.

4:3 was television standard
16:9 was television standard
21:9.. not a television standard

TV's? Screw TV's. I don't even watch TV. The monitor I described will be on the desk of gamers and enthusiasts by 2020.
Actually, I would make a great politician. Know why? Because I know what's best for you. What's best for you and everyone else is a monitor like I described. You want this monitor and so does everyone else. Its the ideal monitor and everyone should have one.

As long as I can get in on the ground level for like $200, I'd do it.

Remember that 16:9 as a display standard was a compromise between the cinematic scope ratio of movies and the 4:3 "full frame" ratio of television (and movies) of long ago. Ambitious users that invest in CIH projection setups or other more adjustable setups to make the display area match the content are like... 1% of 1% of 1%. For the rest of us, one single standard has resulted in a plethora of inexpensive displays of all sizes and capabilities.

It could certainly be argued TODAY that something between 16:9 and 21:9 be the new standard as nearly all television is 16:9 and movies range from 1:85-2.35. BUT you're talking about a complete top-to-bottom supply, manufacturing, and distribution change for the display industry... it's never going to happen. 21:9 will be niche for a long time.

They see the benefit of 8k and how it will let you use 1080p or any res you want while appearing native due to super saturated PPI. Soon they will toy around with ultra wide formats. Technology will catch up to practicality and my prediction is well in line with becoming reality. I want you to ask yourself, "How could bogg have actually known this?"
As the ideal monitor gets closer and closer, it will all come together just as I said, and with each iteration you will shrug it off, until the day comes that I take a picture of the ideal monitor as it sits on my desk, and on that monitor will be this sub forum and it will show this very post.

Yeah, pretty much what my end game is. Though I want 240Hz, and I guess 21:9 is fine. If I had the money, hardware, and space, I see no reason not to go 34-38 inch 21:9 since it is a wider ~27-30-inch 16:9.

Don't see my version for many, many, years. And even your conservative 144Hz is still at least a decade away, I'd wager. I'll buy you one myself it it's in stores in 2020.

Blurb at the end of this article. LG is starting OLED monitor production for medical monitors. Perhaps we can see trickle down to the consumer level a year later?
http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/engl...-electronics-unveil-quantum-dot-tvs-next-year

For the utilization of OLED in the medical care sector, Kwon said, “The monitor division at LG Electronics is planning to start expanding the medical monitor business, including ultra high definition medical monitors, from the end of this year.

Additionally, they've already demonstrated high frame rate on TV prototypes earlier this year. OLED HFR monitors ARE coming.

I'm definitely looking forward to 8K, maybe more. I'd rather the picture be comfortably beyond my ability to see any granularity. Doing cartography, we'd print drafts at 150 or 300dpi and finals at 600dpi. I'd settle for 450+.
