The Fit looks awesome. I would totally wear that, but I'd like to know more of the features and of course the price before going ahead.

does it work with non galaxy phones?

It runs Tizen OS, so nope.

Wonder if there's anyone at Motorola Mobility or Google kicking themselves for not continuing the MotoACTV product? They had a first generation device with some rough edges but otherwise shined. Would have been awesome to see what they did with subsequent generations.

These other smart watches are all meh. The only one thats actually a standalone device is the Pine, and thats a massive device.

This has nothing to do with it not working on non Samsung phones. You do know that Samsungs Galaxy phones run Android right?
Of course Samsung wants people to buy its phone so it would make it that you cant run it on anything else but their phones.

It's smart move by Samsung to drop Android and use their own Tizen OS for these smartwatch. Wearable smart devices are new category of products. Everyone is essentially starting from scratch. Since Samsung is one of the first, they can leverage their multiple product lines and create their own ecosystem before others get a chance to establish.

I think it's a great looking wearable. I'm definitely very interested in it. But I highly doubt I'll buy it since I don't own a Samsung phone.

Hopefully the rumored LG/Google wearable won't suck (and is real).

So you think Samsung's highly customized in-house 'open source' OS on a locked down device with an extremely limited consumer appeal is going to work on non-Samsung devices? Sammy wants you to buy their phones and tablets, they gain nothing if you buy a Fit/Gear 2 and pair it with a Z2 or M8.

You are thick or is English not your first language?
You said because it runs Tizen OS it would not work with a non Samsung device. That has nothing to do with why it wouldn't work with a non Samsung device as I pointed out.
It wouldn't work for the reason I said in my last post which is now in bold.

I'm honestly not interested in wearables until they start using color e-ink displays.

I've seen demos of those things for years, where are they?! Why are we shoving AMOLED and (LCD?) displays into watches? Is this just a case of AMOLED is Samsung's hammer, and watches are the cool new nail?

If I could use it with a non-Samsung phone.. I'm all in. Already planning on returning my Fitbit Force due to the recall. Thing is falling apart on me anyways after just a few months of owning it.

So basically Bateluer was right ["...highly customized in-house 'open source' OS on a locked down device..."] just not about Tizen.

Also something to consider... the text is facing the wrong way. It can't be horizontal, it needs to be vertical so it's actually facing you when you look at it.

It's looking a lot less cool now.
I'm still curious who the audience for these things even is? I've never seen a Galaxy Gear on anyone's arm.

I'm a pretty big Samsung geek (SGS3/Note2/Note3/Note Pro 12.2) and yet I probably wouldn't be caught dead with that thing on my arm.

Who exactly is clamoring for these things?

It turns out the Gear Fit is not running Tizen like the other two Gear watches. It's running a completely barebones real time operating system and has no third party app support like the Tizen Gear 2 and Neo. So it seems like what you get is all you get with the Fit.

It's looking a lot less cool now.

Another great quote from that article:

Meanwhile, the smartwatches are still Samsung-only, and that's unlikely to change. Madhavapeddy said that's because the smartwatch technology is closely tied to the hardware in Samsung's products.
"There are certain functionalities we have in this product in terms of how they interact with Galaxy that we really can't replicate on a different platform," he said. "If you offer it on other operating systems or platforms, there would be reduced functionality."
For example, two-way voice interaction wouldn't work, nor would the smart relay feature that allows the phone to open a full message when a notification arrives on the Gear.
Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo work with 17 Samsung devices. Gear Fit works with 20, with the extra three coming from Samsung's Tab 3 tablet series.
Gear Fit also can be used as a standalone device for health features. However, features such as notifications won't work unless the fitness band is connected to a Samsung mobile device.

So those of us without Samsung phones are out - I'd figure they'd at least want my wearables business. Guess I'll be taking a harder look at the new Razer wearable.

I never said it had the proper functionality. Just the form factor. This is the first one that goes for a proper shape.
