distributed computing. I mean come on, check out the DC forum, it's PURE entertainment Some are soooooo enthusiastic and are like "oh, lets race DSL Reports... we gonna win this one guys! Hang in there! Huga-haga! We need some support from OT! Come on guys, join our race, it's fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun". How can you call DC fun?

It helps give computing power to worthy causes (what's more worthy than another is pure personal opinion), so why not make a game out of it to get some more power into a project? Take a gander into the DC forum and pick a project that sounds worthy to you and see if you get into it. I joined Folding@Home just as something to put my then-new Athlon XP to use (upgraded from a K6-2 450 for some perspective) and now I'm trying to convince people to join.

Agreed. I remember one day actually reading a post by some clown who was upgrading his computer - in great part because of DC - and he was quite serious about using price money from one of these to help cover his computer expenses, as if his new rig would give him such a leg up on the competition, how could he not win?

I was involved in the united devices cancer project for a long time, but then when they switched over to smallpox
I stopped. Is there a distributed computing prog out there again crunching for cancer?

maybe folding@home...

YAST? Yet Another Stupid Thread?

Yeah, I am a DC nut. The competition between teams is great, and many friends have been made via DC.

So I guess you have your computer sitting there all day, running the "System Idle Process", and not doing anything other than neffing on ATOT? While I'm posting on AT, my computer is crunching away, using the power i'm paying for to do something, which is IMO, worthy of my CPU power.

If you don't want to run any projects, then fine, but some do, just leave it at that.

Yeah, stupid or senseless

If it's for cancer, I can understand it. But if it's something like.... Seti.... come on, get real. And no, my computer doesn't run 24/7

Yeah, I just find it funny, that's all. All the competition about cracking RC5-64 for example. I know that's over but it's just an example

Skoorb, F@H crunches for Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease among others. Find-a-Drug (FAD) crunches for anti-cancer drugs and there's probably another that does some sort of anti-cancer research. Ideally, I'd like you to join F@H, but whatever you think is worthy of your CPU cycles is reason enough to run it.

How can it be considered a sport when all it takes is you installing the program?

I wouldn't call running DC projects a "sport" either.

It's more like a hobby.

DC projects are the ultimate play on a geek's "my computer is better than yours" attitude.

Well at least with DC you can do it in private. Curling IS geeky. In fact, I'd almost call it less of a sport than bowling - and I hate bowling. No, I take that back. Curling is more skillful than bowling, but still!

Some of the DC projects are a good way to burn-in a new system, too, or test the limits of overclocking.

And, you scoff at SETI but it has produced some scientific benefits and it put Distributed Computing on the map. F@H has been mentioned and then there's climate prediction and who knows what in the future.

During the last olympics, I watched some curling. It's actually pretty interessting and you need some REAL skill to play that IMO.

conjur: ok, what about RC5-64 and that other stuff where it's only about cracking a code?

I'd say any DC project you can think of is a lot more worthwhile than any competitive sport :/

What a negative attitude.

I personally don't see the fun or point in kicking/throwing/hitting round a little ball to each other.

You personally don't see the fun or point in running DC projects.

Do I make threads saying "and the most stupid sport EVER has to be..." about the things I don't see the fascination in? Nope. I just let you all enjoy what you want to enjoy, so let us enjoy what we want to enjoy. I'll let you play/watch whatever sport you like to, and you let me run/talk about whatever DC project I want to, OK?

True, but it's still not manly! In regards to bowling it's a tribute to the inbreeding that the top bowlers in the world have still not mastered being able to consistently get all pins down with every attempt.

Confused: When I say geeky, do you feel offended? Now you know the reason why you are an Elite Member(you let other people have fun) and I'm not You can have all the fun in the world but I can still find it funny, no?

conjur: you can find sense in everything if you look hard enough

Skoorb: "True, but it's still not manly!" Neither is driving a Nissan :Q
