While I haven't tried it, so I could be totally wrong here. I was at the 99 cent store and they had a Beer called "Beer 30" it wasn't super cheap @ .99 a can. The name + the shoddy looking label screamed "horrible!" perhaps I'll go tomorrow and pick up a fan to try it.

With that said, a lot of the generics are just the major brand relabeled. It's hit or miss unless you know what is and what isn't. I had some store brand Ranch dressing and it was god awful. And the store brand tooth-paste was even worse.

There are some generics that are effective and high quality enough to be worth the embarrassment at the counter and sometimes socially acceptable in front of your friends but for the most part there are obvious reasons why brands carry their image and generics being frowned upon. You certainly don't want to be seen in public wearing generic clothes like Wrangler or anything from K-Mart and the likes but it's OK to take generic aspirin as long as it is known to be effective.

Wrangler jeans have been around since 1947, and are not generic. They are the best work jeans out there, with the exception of Carhardt. They have unfortunately outsourced, but the quality is still there.

Contact lens solution. I never thought there was a different until I started using some target solution that was left over. My god, my contacts are dry as fuck throughout the day and in the morning it hurts putting them in. I have 2 week contacts and before with the name brand ones I could use them for at least a month. Its not even two weeks yet with the target ones and I just want to throw them away.

Wrangler jeans may not be stylish, but they are anything but generic. The only knock I heard about Wrangler was that they were "farmer jeans", because people who actually did physical labor and wanted jeans that last bought Wrangler.

I wear Wrangler jeans. Or I wear nothing at all.

I actually prefer the Yipes Stripes (generic) over the Smuckers brand.

shampoo/conditioner (when I had long hair, at least, I noticed a clear difference between panteen vs anything else)
flour (king arthur or bust)
peanut butter (skippy)
bread (which isn't necessarily the fault of the generic brand, they just don't have as many varieties as arnold's or pepridge farm)

The basic rule of thumb for many generics is, if it doesn't meet the quality standards for name brand, it's packaged generic.

I'm really surprised by people not buying generic because it'll make them look cheap to their friends. I thought most people got past that kind of stuff shortly after high school.

I personally buy generic everything except for pop and some chips (some generic chips are good, and some are awful). Obviously some things are available in generic. For example, I buy 100% red whole wheat flour, and I haven't seen that in generic. If I did, I'd be all over it

Edit: I guess I should rephrase my statement and say that I buy whatever has the lowest price per unit, and sometimes the name brand is cheaper either because of a sale or because the generic only comes in a small container compared to a huge and cheaper-per-unit name-brand container.

Almost everything name brand. Mostly because i buy in bulk and it comes out cheaper.

Trash bags, Charmin toilet paper, bounty paper towels, bread, meet, condiments, etc.

Cola. Some store brands are ok but so are really sickly sweet. Worse than Pepsi to the point of being undrinkable. It's Coca-Cola or nothing.

Wal-Mart's tartar sauce is also pretty gross. Way too much dill.

generic cola is fucking terrible

Errr...for a lot of major brand name companies, the incremental unit cost of each additional item is sold for the same mark-up as their actual items, so they have no problem packaging the same (or similar) item for less for chain X considering it's going into the same pocket for the same profit margin. I've yet to see the quality standards as a reason for generic packaging...link?

Frosted Mini-Wheats. The Kellog's version is very different from the generic versions.

Also, I prefer real Pepsi over Big-K cola, especially since there is no caffeine-free Big-K.

Taking a look around yesterday:

- Laundry detergent (can't say I've seen a Target brand LD, but the cheap brands are terrible in terms of keeping colors bright, it's worth the extra money for Tide)
- Bar soap - again, haven't seen a generic version at Target for bar soap, but considering my 1-2 showers a day, it's worth it buying the better/not cheap stuff
- Toothpaste - it's Aquafresh or nothing at all
- Certain snacks - I don't tend to buy a ton of snacks just b/c of my diet and tendency to eat healthy, but when I do, it's normally the name brand b/c there is a small discernable difference IMO (Wheat Thins, tortilla chips, Goldfish crackers)
