If you can sense the difference between a person joking, and a pissed off person that's all you need to know. "aksed"? WTF, I love his spelling of words that aren't real words. Out of all the words he defined I think 2 might be semi imporant to know if you want to stay out of trouble in the "hood" knowing what a chip is won't help for shit. And if a black person says "mo" or "befo" to you, I'm sure everyone except the grammar nazi's would understand what was said.

This is the type of cop who probably uses racial profiling to target minorities, I see 5-0 (as he used) abusing their power ever day in the projects. I chuckled at some of what was written but it's a lame attempt and overall does nothing to help anyone understand the "hood" any more. He was trying to be a comedian, fine. but at least be funny isn't that the point? he failed badly there.


to OP no way will he get fired, at worst he'll get suspension - which for 5-0 is nothing more than paid leave (vacation) I'd love to have a job where when I fucked up I got to take a week or 2 off with pay. Cops kill minorities in the projects and rarely get fired, they always find probable cause, you know like Dave Chappelle jokes Crack on them. Dave was obviously joking, but there is truth in jest. If anything, this will probably get this cop promoted.

it's offensive because a lot of people who read it have little to no dealings with any people of color. So when they see a black man, who let's say is a senior stock broker on Wall Street. The idiots who think this guide is 100% accurate will speak to him with what they've "learned" (or should I say lernt?) It does nothing but enforce stereotypes of what people in the hood talk/act like and make them out to be bafoons. The reality is, it's a fairly small % of people you'll encounter who will say "yo, Im finna get me a foty cuz" Plenty of people who don't speak Ebonics will be offended by this, because it will lead to them being percived as a person who speaks poorly simply based off their skin color. At least he could have added a white/latino/asian person to the cover to show it's not a black thing, but more of an inner city thing.

why would it be? it would be an HONEST representation of the subject matter at hand. When was the last time you went to a rap concert? Last one I went to the crowd was a good 75% white, if not more, and most that I spoke to used Ebonics. Yes Ebonics was started by black people, but they are no longer the majority when it comes to it's usage, period.

I hear this type of language (especially "axed" in place of asked!) used all the time & regardless of how you or anyone else feels about it, the vast majority of those I hear using it are African-American.

In my opinion the officers conduct was unprofessional & he should have known better then to distribute that booklet, however saying that people don't speak like this is simply not true.


Edit: In fairness I also hear quite a few of my kids teenage friends speaking "Ebonics" & the split among them is pretty much evenly divided between black & white.

That book is very true, he should not have gotten in trouble. I am grateful that cops of all races target blacks specifically. Blacks cause most of the trouble in the city. Anything to keep the streets safer.

This book was far from offensive, I didn't say "Black people talk like this, so you better learn their language!" If you are a stock broker, you don't change your language pattern based on what a person looks like, you change it based on what they say. Even then, I don't know many people that would try and speak ebonics when someone else is unless they actually where raised in a situation where they where around a lot of it.

The cop shouldn't have been fired or suspended IMO, the most that should have happened is letting the memory of the book and its publisher slip into nothingness.
