I'm not too sure why there are 15+ FBI agent in Aruba "helping" with the case. If this happened in Siberia, I don't think they would be there "helping."

Thanks LR. winky-winky.

Because while they may be 18 they were affiliated with a school.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba Jun 11, 2005 ? One of three young men who took an Alabama high school student to the beach during her class trip to Aruba confessed he killed her, police say.

I voted darwinism, but still I think this is a terrible happenstance. Can you imagine the black market price for a rich little white girl from America? The slave trade is still alive and well people. If she isn't sleeping with the fishes, she's well you can use your own imaginiation. Or did they find the body? (Sorry I'm just out of the loop, going back and rereading thread.)

I don't know how you guys can be so hard on the girl. Yeah, she was kind of dumb. But we were all probably that dumb at her age, I know I was. Hell, it STILL hasn't quite worn off

I wonder what the motive was for killing her? The girl and one of the suspects were apparently "passionately kissing" in the backseat of the car -- maybe she wouldn't go all the way and he got pissed.

Sick violent people can appear fairly normal. Who really knows the true details. Maybe they put a gun in her back and told her to get in? Hard to know rumors from fact, since none of us was there. I just don?t see how things like this meeting can lead to murder, ever. I can see someone (postal worker) fired and returning to shoot the boss. I can see neighbors, over the years, fighting and it leading to the murder on one. Or a kid harassed constantly at school, bringing a gun and taking out the bullies/ I don?t agree with any of this but I can see how it would create the anger to murder. But not a chance meeting of strangers, leading to murder. Maybe she laughed at his little tiny weenie, and he went nutz? All five, if at all involved together, should fry.

Aruba presents itself as a very safe community (part of being a dutch protectorate). Crime on the major carribean tourist islands is usually limited to robbery, murders, like this one appears to be, are pretty rare on islands like aruba. You would have to visit to understand but with it's very high tourist focus Aruba and the bar Carlos and Charlies are viewed as extremely safe. Being that she was right around 18 (and people that young are pretty stupid) and the relative safety of the island it's not unreasonable of her to expect to go to the beach with a stranger and not be afraid of being murdered.

Well, after reading about the confession (later retracted/amended? Van der Sloot?) and then looking at the info in this older article, I'd say the 3 (Van der Sloot + the 2 Kalpoe brotheres) friends are at least involved to the extent of covering up, making up a story, if not actually participating in her murder. It doesn't sound like she was ever dropped off at her hotel.. so the security guards were just pulled into it because of that story.

I don't think high school grad trips are going to be very popular next year.

Sure, it probably wasn't a terribly good idea on her part; but blaming her is pretty disturbing. Blame is perfectly alright when what happens is a natural and necessary consequence. Touch a heated object, you'll get burned, idiot. Step off a cliff and you'll fall, just the laws of physics. With this, though, the connection is established only by somebody else comitting a crime.

In practice, it is rather foolish to put yourself under the potential power of others; but the problem is when they abuse that power.

My hope is that it devestates US->Aruban tourism. That should motivate the Aruban government to provide better tourist security.

Cough. What should they do, inject mini tracking devices into your ass? Provide a private armed chaperone for every single tourist who sort of just decides he wants to go to Aruba? Please, how about these hitherto incompetent parents start teaching their kids something useful, like how to not be an idiot? My father didn't teach me much of anything academic, but he certainly gave me a keen understanding about the kinds of people who inhabit this world.

If they want US tourism they should do whatever is necessary to protect said tourists, if that means providing armed guards at the beaches and restricting the movements of tourists or simply providing penalties such that no one living on the island would commit the crime.

Lets have an example, on Barbados it is illegal to wear camoflauge. It is illegal because some individuals a number of years ago were kidnapping and robbing tourists while pretending to be the millitary. To prevent a loss of tourism Barbados made it illegal to wear camoflauge to protect their tourists.

What it comes down to is what Aruba is going to do to protect their tourists, as I said it's a fairly upscale island because it recieves a larger percentage of that tourism than some of the other islands. If it doesn't want to lose that tourism it should impliment laws and security necessary to protect the tourists.

I don't see how this incident reflects negatively on the security of Aruba. She was hanging out with 3 kids. 2 were natives, one was a Dutch kid, the son of a judicial official. Nothing seems wrong with that scenario really. The resulting alleged murder sounds like a freak occurance to me.

Yes! That's it! Aruba can use the new biometic transrectal passport system and then use Star Wars technology to track all valuable americans while they use the beach that americans deserve. It's our beach and our country.... damn those dirty Arubanites! We are important! More FBI guys to Aruba! Quick! Yawn.........

The girl was from "Mountain Brook, Alabama", she just turned 18, she's in the middle of the closest place to paradise she's ever been before and some of you are surprised she acted a little naive??? And then go so far as to infer she-had-it-comin'??? - not. cool.

Her safety net wasn't there and she wasn't wise enough to take care of herself.

but really, who hasn't gotten drink and gone home with strange men. happens all the time.
