A movie like Goonies just doesn't work today. We used to ride our bikes far from home. Today I don't think kids are allowed to go outside of the cul-de-sac. A grand adventure today would be discovering something new one street over from your own.

Yeah I was a kid in the 80's, but I pretty much only watched horror movies when i was little. I did love The Lost Boys which you mentioned in a later post.

QTF I remember in '83 when friends and I found map in one of our attics and used it to go search for pirate treasure in a cave at the beach. We were chased by baddies who wanted to kill us. We ended up finding the treasure and were thankfully able to escape from the crooks. We used said treasure to pay off the mortgage of one of the friends who was about to get evicted.

Kids today with their Playstations and Facebooks don't know shit about that!

I don't know man, I am still trying to make it through the Ninja Turtles movie and it's kind of a slog. Not sure I want to re-visit a lot more of these old kids movies.

Actually it is very good. I just rewatched it a few months ago. Sure it's an 80's movie, but it's one of the better ones.

You of all people should have seen this and if you haven't need to.

Some of it may not ring as well with you not having seen it as a kid, but..eh.

PS: I hated the turtles movies.

They can't. Audience attention spans are at an all-time low so even a serious picture like The Great Gatsby has to have something new and shiny every other minute. The drama picture or the story development picture has to be independent in order to not be crap.

On the TV side though it has gotten much much better thanks to R-rated shows with production values that beat even the best movies of the 80s.

I would take GOT, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Mad Men or Sherlock over any show made in the 80s, even if that cuts out a few seasons of my alltime favorite show (TNG).

If they're going to remake such a popular movie, they should at least put a huge spin on it.
A mash up movie of Goonies & The Warriors could be interesting. The crooks in the original Goonies were lame. Now Chunk and the gang getting chased by bat welding Baseball Fury members could be pretty bad ass.

'Round the clock, national/international news coverage has convinced everyone that there's a kidnapper, molester, or murderer on every street corner unfortunately. Statistically, we're safer now than ever.

Hell, in my mind those old movies should be a standard our kids today strive to obtain again! My wife gets mad at me when I let our kids go play in the woods out back, even if they take my cell phone with them for "safety" purposes.

It is funny because one of the kids from my neighborhood was actually kidnapped on my block. He got into a stranger's car and was taken somewhere. They eventually found him like 15 miles away or something. And all we got was the "Don't get in the car with strangers" talk a few times and sent back to our own devices. My mother's rules for dinner were "if you're not home when it gets dark and dinner is on the table, you don't get to eat." Yeah, I tried testing that rule once. Never again.
