So I was looking for a 550ti, but decided to grab quite a bit faster hd7770 for almost the same $.
Later GTX660ti was haunting me, but I grabbed used 7950 for half the price of 660ti.
Now I have used 290 I grabbed for $200.

So I'm slightly nv biased, but am so cheap, that I will never pay premium to fill my bias.

And those served you very well?

Certainly the 7950 is still actually a capable GPU today, in the 280/380 incarnation, where we see newer stuff like the 960 2GB so underwhelming.

The 290 is still kicking ass and taking names with a new make-over as the 390!

So your cheapness actually ended up giving you a great deal. Right?

Hopefully AMD prices Polaris well, so gamers who value bang for buck will stick with them.

I value principles and technological innovation.

I boycott Nesley products because of the child slavery they use and the amount of Canadian water they steal.

I'm also an architectural buff. So my past GPUs have been all over the place. My favorite all time GPUs are:

Voodoo
Voodoo 2
Geforce 256
Radeon 9700 Pro
Geforce 8800 GTX
Radeon HD 7970
Radeon R9 290x

Now I'm waiting for the next technological marvel.

I lately prefer AMD only because they are honest with their customers, and with Nvidia I don't really know if advertised specs are real, and if I will be supported after 2 years

As a company, I prefer AMD since they seem to rely less on shady business practices, and also don't seem intent to screw over their customers that much. I hate Gameworks with a passion.

As for the actual graphics card I buy, it all comes down to perf/$. Couldn't care less about power usage (unless loud fans are required to cool everything). Cards I've bought:

3dfx Voodoo 1
3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 AGP
nVidia GeForce 4400 Ti
nVidia GeForce 7300 GS
nVidia GeForce 8800 GT
AMD Radeon HD 7870 XT

As you can see I don't upgrade that often, usually only when a massive leap in perf/$ is being made.

I have never owned NVIDIA hardware, well except my ultrabook with Optimus. Very long history with ATI/AMD VGAs here, dating back to the Radeon 8500. Funnily I'd probably lean towards the green side today, only because I can't stand the amount of hype/fanboys surrounding AMD products in tech forums, and the poll confirms my suspicions.

i've owned cards from both companies since the days of the ATI Rage Pro II 8MB + Creative VooDoo2 8MB combo i had, no bias towards either. Although, I think nVidia are overcharging in recent generations due to their (imagined?) higher perceived brand value and i don't like the fact that card prices are skyrocketing and that is why i prefer buying used/2nd hand cards.

This poll result so far, is unexpected.

What's a bit shocking is how few are "unbiased" (currently 21|6|15). This place is getting as extreme as American politics. Says something to people coming here trying to get unbiased advice on what is the best video card for there needs.

I voted for an AMD bias.

I've had a 5870, 6870 and now have a 290 in my primary rig. When purchasing, I haven't felt the need to buy the absolute best card available, so performance to price above a baseline perfomance level has been my primary consideration. When I bought both the 5870 and 6870 I was genuinely brand agnostic. Both of those cards were the best buy available at the time for what I needed.

By the time I got the 290, it was still the best performance/price card for the performance I wanted. However, I had since learned enough about NV's business practices, that I was relieved that the card that was objectively the best one for my needs at the time wasn't an NV card.

For the next card I buy, I'll still get the best performance/price card available that fits my needs. That does mean that I would buy a NV card if it's the best option for what I need. However, if the data comes down on the AMD side instead of the NV side I will feel better knowing that I'm not enabling business practices that I disagree with.

It's less that I like AMD than it is that I dislike what NV is doing.

Honestly depends on the use case... for professional purposes, Quadro wins every time. For gaming, just go bang per buck.

Nvidia Riva TNT 2 32 MB
Geforce FX5200
Geforce 6600 GT
Geforce 8800 GT
Geforce GT650M

Well, you know which team I support .

But lately, due to some reasons(DX12 situation, GTX970 3.5 GB of RAM fiasco, etc.) I started supporting AMD.

However that does not exactly mean I will buy their hardware. Best hardware will win for me.

NV all the way.I don't like companies which are content with being "second", on a side note send these poll results to JPR Arachnotronic they might have a heart attack

Worked like a charm.
7770 was a cheap club3d model and I had to manually set the fan curve to make it whisper silent. On default it tried to stay below 70'C. It is running to this day in my Bros PC. Good card for old 1280x1024.

I had to upgrade my GPU when I jumped to fullhd. Got myself 7870, which after some mining I sold and got 7950. That got rid of 2GB stutter in some games.

7950 was champ oced to 1150 Mhz. Sold it and moved to 2560x1080 freesync, which 7950 didn't support.

So I bought used reference 290 from mining rig, for peanuts. Slapped Gelid Icy cooler. It is fast enough for my 2560x1080 at 1100 Mhz.
It mined around $50 recently, so it was a worthwhile investment. I may decide to run it 24/7 mining operation.

I prefer Nvidia but I am currently on my 2nd generation in a row of personal PC's using AMD. My LAN machines are as always 50/50 for AMD/Nvidia.

The results are very interesting. Intuitively, I was expecting a far more even split between AMD and Nvidia. As some one else said, and I did not factor in to my prediction, Nvidia's reputation is pretty low at the moment. I also suspect there are not as many brand agnostics as this poll suggests.

For the record I have an Nvidia preference, however, if I were to buy today I would get a 390. And be very happy with it.

This thread is a good thing: being honest about ones own biases is the next best thing to being ubiased.

nvidia reputation is always low in this forum.

If you search about market, steam or sales figures

nvidia has the ratio of 4:1 against AMD.

Used to be a huge Nvidia fanboy for many years until i bought a 5870

These day i lean towards AMD but make no mistake, i'll buy whatever is best for me, i don't care for brand bias when my money is in the equation so i vote unbiased

When it comes to hardware the best thing is to look objectively to specs, price, features and not what a bunch of people you don't even know personally say or think. Just my 2 cents

I have bought the AMD cards the most but I was also really happy with a Nvidia EVGA 580 too. I changed to a R9 380 4GB Strix because the 580 was so extremely loud even after TIM change and cleaning. Had a really hard time deciding between that 380 and 960. I know the 390 maybe would be better, but I just had to have a quieter card before the new offerings arrive this year or next.

My choices reflect this. Still, I've always had the impression that Nvidia offers better support. And I also value performance per watt and features you won't find in consoles, not just raw performance per dollar.

It's changing everywhere, in all the forums where I post.

If AMDs Polaris performs well, expect to see people ditching NVIDIA. They've burned far too many bridges.

I for one welcome open standards becoming the predominant ideology. This will push innovation forward and every consumer will benefit from that.

I've owned cards from both vendors, but as I buy used GPUs more than new, I like that AMD can be found for a lot less than NVidia, and they hold on much longer. So, I'm biased to AMD. But they are starting to piss me off lately. They still didn't implement glsl 4.50 that I'm waiting for more than half a year. Of course this will be superseded by Vulkan, but I'm afraid that they will hold on with it until Polaris release.

Come on now. Choosing out of spite is a tried and proven technique.
