My TV FAQ contains a thourough description of how to set up MPlayer to use every codec imaginable. It almost warrants a completely seperate FAQ.

is Linux a good operating system? heard a lot good stuffs about it for years... never used it... its only servers right?

[QUESTION]

Dear Electrode,

Your FAQ about installing the Leadtek WinFast TV Tuner card, while probably really good, is way over my head. Is there a shortened version of how to make it work, or a "Setting up a TV Card in Red Hat 9 for Dummies" way?

Also, my 6-in-1 USB 1.1 Reader (which I use for compact flash) doesn't show up in Linux. Any ideas? I got it off Newegg for 10 bucks last summer and it says Linux does not support it, so am I totally SOL??

1. My explanation is as simple as it gets. Most distros will automaticly detect and configure your TV card. Open a command prompt, run dmesg | less, and look for a mention of your card. You can also do /sbin/lsmod and see if "bttv" is loaded.

2. Check /sbin/lsmod for usb-storage. If it's not there, become root and run modprobe usb-storage. If it's still not detected, you are indeed SOL.

What I have been meaning to do, when I have time (HA!) is to go through the entire thread, picking out the important parts and starting a new thread. I think that would be more useful than the sticky.
