Probably already mentioned but watching Kirk Gibson knock that ball over the wall in the bottom of the 9th with 2 fucked up legs was awesome (on tv of course lol)

Giants beating undefeated Patriots
It is like you guys don't get it.

The Soviet hockey team was the best team in the world. They were the Patriots.

The US team though was a bunch of college players thrown together for the Olympics. They don't even compare to the Giants. They were more like the teams thrown together for the Senior bowl.

Imagine a football game between the Saints and Alabama. No mater how good Alabama was this year they would be absolutely crushed by the Saints or any other team in the NFL.

And yet some how a bunch of college players got together in 1980 and beat the best Hockey team in the world. A team that had beaten its previous opponents by a total of 51 to 11, a 5 to 1 ratio.

And BTW from their first appearance at the Winter Olympics to their last the Soviet Hockey team won every gold medal except for two, 1960 and 1980.

This would be my vote.

Great game but, to me, "Miracle" owns it hands down. Of course I think to understand why you would need to have been alive (and aware) during the Cold War. The game itself was a huge upset but the whole political part of it was quite another.

miracle on ice, without question. i am at work so i can't watch all your youtube links, but i don't need to.

Miracle on Ice... it's known as a miracle because it was one.

72 Summit series win is my favourite sports triumph... but as far as the greatest victory, you gotta give it to the 1980 US men's hockey team.

in terms of one that i actually witnessed... the Michigan / Michigan state triple OT thriller. without question the craziest sporting event I ever attended!!

Absolutely the best baseball ever played. The world series was just an afterthought after that playoff series. I lived in the Boston area and people were getting 3 hours of sleep or so during that series, and when they won, you knew they were gonna blow through the NL contender.

This is the first one I thought of.

This is why the Miracle on Ice was and is the greatest upset in history. The analogy of the Super Bowl champs vs a college team is spot on. The Soviet hockey team was a professional team (except by Olympic standards at the time). It was their full-time job and they were the most talented in the world. I remember before the game was played reading an article that said if the US team could keep it to a 5-goal loss, that would be a great outcome. I think Tretiak (the Soviet goalie) was the first player put in the NHL Hall of Fame who never played a game in the NHL. He was probably the best in the world at the time, yet they pulled him before the first period had ended in the Miracle game.

No Muhammad Ali fans in here? I'm not even a fan of boxing, but the man is the greatest competitor ever.
