I would love to see a debate between President Obama and Newt.

Newt would destroy him.

Obama is terrible at speaking without a teleprompter. Even worse than GWB.

Not that I think Newt can win the election and become President, but it would be a riot to watch him debate Obama.

My friend Charles says that SC GOP would vote for a shaved monkey as long as it isn't Mr Romney. Maybe Charles is right.

Before someone mentions it I will say right now I would not vote for Mr Clinton because he lied. But then I doubt Mr Clinton will ever run for another political office.

AFAIR in the 2008 debates, Mr Obama did not blow any.

I can imagine Mr Gingrich coming out with another great idea like replacing union workers with children. Or some other red meat designed for the GOP base that would sound crazy in a general election.

Yeah... my thoughts exactly. The whole teleprompter thing is just another popular silly talking point for idiots. I don't even like Obama, but could we imagine what would happen if Gingrich actually became pres?!?!?! D:

I could see him being Nixonesque, in both the good and the bad ends.

Newt would solidly destroy him in a debate, and it would be very entertaining to watch, but even the most ardent Obama supporter knows this fact, whether they want to admit it or not.

That is why his "handlers" would never allow a fair, straight up debate to happen. Obama will undoubtedly be pressured to appear in some kind of debate or debates, but count on it/them being very restrictive that favor Obama (bias moderators and use of a teleprompter maybe?) I believe Newt would still do well with the restrictions, but not nearly well enough to lift him into the White House.

I see no way Newt can beat the anointed one.

I'm not sure about that. It seems that Fig Newton fans want to see him just rip into Obama at the debate, but all that will do is make Fig Newton fans happy, it would probably turn off moderate and independent voters, which is a big deal since Fig Newton has pretty low favorability ratings.

Plus, Obama is a fantastic debater anyways.

Well the debate wouldn't have anything to do with facts then.

Quite the opposite. Whenever GOP candidates play the tough, defiant, take-no-prisoners style Gingrich has shown in the GOP debates, they do well with moderates, i.e. Ronald Regan.

When GOP candidates play the flip-flop, take-all-sides, take-it-safe style, they do poorly with moderates, i.e. Bob Dole, John McCain.

Mainly GOP diehards are voting in the GOP primaries, so Fig Newton's performance after his debate just confirms what I'm saying.

I'm talking about history and how it could be used in the general election.

Here, I'll simplify it for you.

Who had strong conservative convictions, was defiant and pugnacious, and was overwhelmingly successful with moderate voters in the general election? Ronald Reagan.

Who's been more defiant and pugnacious by leaps and bounds in this GOP primary. Newt.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the level of conservative principles that RR had, no, he absolutely is not.
If Ronald Reagan were alive today he would be soundly denounced by the modern GOP as a RINO.

The GOP loves the myth of Reagan, not the reality.

You really think so? Obama loses his eloquence without the teleprompter, but not his intelligence and ability to speak on simple terms. He did well enough in the 2008 debates against McCain.

As to the original topic: Newt didn't just win in SC, he dominated. The Republican Party, in some respects, seems more fragmented than the Democrats. Once the nominee is chosen, however, I think most of them will fall in line behind the 'anyone but Obama' candidate.

Gotta luv the "teleprompter denial" among Righties, given the way Obama handled the Repub caucus in a televised event a while back...

They declined any sort of rematch.

It'd be great to hear Newt pitch the merits of his hands off the Rich tax plan... when most Americans favor raising taxes at the top...

He speaks in the coded racism of the South with the best of them, it's his native language, but that won't really sell in a national venue...

A can of beans can do well against McCain.

Please. Mr Obama is a very competent debater. You have no evidence to the contrary.

Regardless, Newt would be the punching bag of candidates.

Hell all of these silly Repub candidates are.
