The Guessing Game

Hi Everyone:

Just for fun, I thought we could play a game. It's kind of a perception-versus-reality game. We form perceptions about people based on our interactions with them. I think it would be fun to guess what other people look like and some of the basic aspects of their lives (i.e.- married, single, teen, geezer, jock, geek, etc) I know many of us know what others look like (from pics, etc), but lets give it a wing.

Just to get it going, I'll start with me. For those of you who have interacted with me, what is your image me? Am I fat, skinny, geeky (well, its a computer forum, we're all somewhat geeky), whatever. Am I married or single? How old am I? What are my hobbies?

Later, I'll respond (HONESTLY) to your guesses, but I want others to join in. Just don't reveal anything until later.

Everyone else, here's more help. I'm not just looking for simple stereotypes, but a real guess as to what kind of person you perceive others on this Board to be.

I am a little hesitant to list a bunch of possible adjectives, because I would like to hear the actual thoughts of Anandtechers rather than give pre-programmed options.

But this is meant just for fun, so pick any Anandtechers you want a give your best guess.

I perceive that 99% of Anandtechers are either gangly or fat, geeky looking, acne-covered or acne-scarred, single, socially inept, and living in their mom's basement...

what is in a name? because my name is aznspeed do you assume that i am asian? Instead of forming a idea based on your alias; I ask myself what type of person would start a topic such as this.

I came up with a few conclusions...

Someone that is: a) doing a study to proove a point
b) has ample time on his/her hands
c) concieted
d) is not sincerely religious
e) male or a masculine female

It must noted that people have different personalities online than they do in reality.

Male, in your late 20's or early 30's, not married (at first I said married without kids - I'm not sure about this one); average height and weight, not fat or skinny. Geeky in a good way (of course), but you do have a life outside of computers and participate in some physical activities on a regular basis. Hobbies include church and volunteering, reading....others would say you're an overall nice, helpful guy that gets along well with coworkers and others. I'm guessing you have a fairly close circle of friends (maybe still from school?) that you keep in touch with.

Well, Chrichtonsgirl is probably the closest, but I don't want the game to focus on me. I may be conceited, (I won't deny aznspeed's accusation), but I truly went first just to get the game started. Pick other Anandtechers and see if you can coax them into responding.

OK, maybe I shouldn't have volunteered to go first. It seems the focus is on guessing about me, whereas I would like this to be about Anandtechers in general. So, I'll go ahead and give you straight-up answers about myself and then we can move on:

ChrichtonsGirl was right in a lot of ways: I read a lot, I am involved in my church, and I exercise regularly, mostly weightlifting. I still play some sports like basketball and football. However, the last time I played football I fractured my clavicle and dislocated my shoulder, so if I have any sense I'll "retire" and accept graciously the onslaught of middle age. However, I often have very little sense.

My handle at ATOT is not meant to "hide" behind a mask/persona but to reveal something about myself. Most people seem more bold and reckless in their internet persona. If anything, I am more cautious. I don't flame people, and almost never start threads; I just reply to the ones that most interest me (religion, philosophy, physics theory). I try to be the same person on a BBS as I am in real life. I "lurk" a lot more than I post.

iamwiz pegged me to, but that would have been about fifteen years ago, and the "coffee shop" might just as well have been a "pub" or a keg party.


Now, how about others: What do you think about some of the old timers, like Russ, Red Dawn, UG, or even people who posted on this thread?
