I can't believe how much better OS X is now with Snow Leopard. It's been a few years since I last tried it.

Vanilla kernel. I have 100% migrated so I hope things continue to work!

I just installed OSX 10.6.4 on my Dell Mini 9 with 1GB Memory. Will I notice a jump in performance if I upgrade the memory to 2GB? I'll be doing mostly surfing and word processing.

More than likely. I think you're somewhat speed limited with the CPU, but the RAM will help to keep stuff in memory, so it should give a good kick in the pants.

Got my Vanilla SL hackintosh up and going. Installed 10.6.3 and upgraded to 10.6.4.

Dell M1530 laptop
C2D 2.5Ghz
8400GS 128MB dedicated graphics
4GB RAM
500GB HD

Got 2 problems that are probably easy to solve, but I can't figure them out.

1) No trackpad options in System Preferences. There is no icon for the trackpad. The basic trackpad functions work, but it's way too fast. According to guides at Insanelymac Forums, I need to edit info.plist that is in the Trackpad.prefpane file under S/L/PreferencePanes. How do I do that? I can open it using TextEdit, but can't save it.

2) How do I confirm that both cores are active? When I click on "About this Mac" it shows the right CPU, but says I only have 1 core.

Spent a ton of time on it this past weekend. Did some bad things, had to reinstall 4 times, but learned a lot in the process (this is my first Mac experience). While it's not much, I'm proud to just be at this point.

So I just ordered:

2.66 Core i5
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2

Do you think I'll need to do a full system install to get it up and going, or can I just swap it out and go?

I have the GA P35 Rev 2.0 board currently with a C2D 2.53 chip.

Has anyone got this to work on a Dell Lattitude D630?

I have one laying around that I'd like to get OS X up and running on so I can get my wife using the OS and finally make the switch to Mac only for her also.

Will help me convince her to buy a proper Mac Book if she likes the OS.

Just got SL 10.6.3 setup on Virtualbox using the retail disc. Got everything installed and updated to 10.6.4.

used the following guides/links:
install
resolution - method 3
audio

Hopefully the Oracle/VBox team puts out native guest additions at some point. That should improve some things, like proper desktop acceleration, mouse response, etc...

This should be a nice way for my wife to give OSX a test drive to see if she'd actually like moving to a Mac from Windows 7 (she's enamored with the iPad and started asking me questions about iMacs).

Thanks for the great guide. I am planning on building a system over the holidays, so I am trying to get my parts list in order. Has Apple changed the way that Snow Leopard is sold? It seems quite difficult to find anything but the upgrade version for sale, and Newegg doesn't carry either the retail or upgrade packages these days.

Upgrade version works as full version.

Are you able to build a hackintosh that supports full 3D with HDMI 1.4a? I would like to use one of the Geforce 6800 series video cards (3D). Can this be done with this specific hardware?

My kid has a newer Acer Aspire with an Intel t4400(I think that is right), 4 gigs of ram and running Windows 7. Worth trying?
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-77.../dp/B003TYQXDC

Has a 4500M GPU. Afaik there's no driver, although you might be able to force native res in VESA mode - but you won't have any hardware acceleration for apps and videos and stuff. Might be an updated driver out there but I didn't see one on a quick search.

I'm giving building a Hackintosh a shot and well... it's not going well at all. In fact, the furthest I can get is the loading screen for the OSX installer :\. I'm using a similar board that they used in the latest Lifehacker build, except mine's the Premium instead of the Pro model.

Any thoughts on things I should try or stuff that typically hangs up the install? I tried it once with passing "-x", but it didn't seem to help then either.

EDIT:

Could using a Radeon 5870 while installing be causing the problem? I have an 8800GT sitting in a box that I could use... but I'd hate to put such a weak card in my secondary desktop .

Aikouka not sure if you found a solution but honestly all my issues were stemming from a video card that simply was causing issues. I tried an ATI 4550, built in Intel i5 HD video, ATI 4970... nada. Grabbed an old Nvidia 8500GT and I mean EVERYTHING worked... instantly. I had never been able to get it running before never made much past the installation.

Once everything was installed, and updated, I installed the new Nvidia drivers package and then pulled out my 8500 GT and replaced with a new GT 430 (so I can use its displayport on my 30" monitor). Worked perfectly.

Yeah, Nvidia is the cat's meow on Hackintosh. You can do some ATI but it's a pain, especially when running updates.

Okay I've not been looking at this for a while but I finally have some extra cash and was going to try a netbook hackintosh. It appears that the current Dells (1010, 1012, and 1018) are not fully compatible. Is this true and is there a good choice for a netbook that would work well? I've seen somethings about some of the Asus ones but I know nothing about them.
Thanks in advance
Brian

The Dell XPS 17 is the only widely available 17" notebook I could find that Snow Leopard will work well with. Any others?

Depends. How much are you willing to spend?

keep in mind 17" macbooks cost $600-2500 (age) the 1920x1200 models maybe $1000 for a core2duo model with some applecare left. LION works 100% guaranteed.

I Googled this and the few things found were conflicting, and I can't find a list. I know OSX doesn't have native Sandy Bridge support yet. But is there a list somewhere of MB's people have got working with their OSX? When I bought my p45 I made sure I got one that was mostly compatible. In about a month I'm looking to build a new p67 box, but if I can't get my OSX working I'll hold off, I can't live without OSX.

MB in question Asus Sabertooth p67 with a 2500k CPU.

At this point it looks like a good number of people have gotten SB systems working with OSX using some work arounds. Don't the new Macbook Pro's use SB?

yeah the new MB pros use SB, and apple will probably refresh the imacs (and hopefully mini) with SB soon...

Hummm, so there should be the ktext's from Apple floating around soon, if they're already out there I cannot find them.
