Contempt of court isn't a good thing and needs to be discouraged but how on earth would it be acceptable to essentially make mouthing off to the judge punished to the same degree as the original crime, and moreover, that extra punishment being 10 more years. Right. A moment of stupidity and disrespect of authority becomes authority turning authoritarian and punishing him with 10 years for a few words spoken in frustration/anger. The moment you've been sentenced, you no longer are entitled to freedom of speech.

As I remember it...(it was 50 years ago) the judge had cut him a break on his sentencing...until he mouthed off.

The thing that bothered me...he pissed the judge off pretty badly...and I was up next. Fortunately for me, (well, sort of) the judge didn't hold the other guy's actions against me...just my own. He COULD have sentenced me to 10 years...but instead, only 1 year in the county jail (with time served) and probation. He had been a B-24 pilot in WWII and cut a recently mustered out Marine a BIG break...with the warning that "If I EVER see you in my court again, you'll go away for the full sentence."
