Yes, the HD-497's are excellent headphones - I picked up a pair recently and really enjoy them, but you can do a bit better here. They're $48.99 + $3.95 shipping.

There was a $5.00 coupon floating around for Amazon, but I don't know if it's still good. Then the prices are about equal.

The Senn HD570 that you recommend are overly bright and are more suitable for classical recording. Also they tend to sound thin if not driven by a head amp. The Senn HD280pro is about $77 at www.etronics.com and sound a lot better than both the 570 and 497.

they were only 79.99 - $10 rebate when i bought them a few weeks ago.

for me they have been crystal clear in all listening situations. personally i am no audiophile but the sound quality and comfort of the hd570s are top notch as compared to anything else in that price range. additionally i cant verify your expertise so the only headset you might be knowledgeable in is the one at burger king... and yes.. i most certainly would like fries with that...

I have 2 friends who own a pair of the Senn 570. They really like it and it's really comfortable. I have tried them on myself and I can't even feel a thing cuz they are so light and go around your ear gently. They don't clamp and push against your ear like my pair of Sony MDR-V6.

recha, I also have the MDR-V6. May not be the most comfortable headphones, but the sound is second to none. Too bad Sony discontinued this model.

The 570's are good phones, but at about $110 I think one can do better. The highly touted HD580 is only about $130 and sound a lot better on all kinds of music. I even saw the 580 go for $100 on ubid recently. They however require good amplification to sound best. Even Sennheisers website says "the HD570 is an ideal choice for the classical music lover". For portability the 280pro is an excellent choice for a closed can. Easy to drive, accurate, with a well defined low end. At about $77 - 10 rebate they are a bargain.

I think the Sony V6 is the same as the V7506. So I think they are still available.

I got my HD600 from the same place in Germany a while ago. I think I paid $190 for them, but its best to email them for their current price. Their price already includes shipping.

I've had the MDR-V6's for about 4-5 years now too. I find them quite comfortable and the sound quality is amazing.

I've owned both the Sony MDR V6's and a pair of Sennheiser HD 540's (an older model that I don't think they sell anymore).
I prefer the Sennheiser's in EVERY way. Sound quality is far superior, and to me they're much more comfortable.
BTW, my headphone listening is mostly music on a decent Mid-Fi setup (i.e. Hafler amp, NAD pream, EAD Transport and DAC), not computer games or MP3's.

my friend just bought the sony v6's... they still sell them at fry's if you're interested in those..

i sorta want to get these 497's.. does anyone else have an opinion on the HD-497's? not any higher model.. unless i can get the 570's or 600's at $50, please stick to comments about the 497's... how do these compare to the 495's? i haven't had a lot of luck in finding the 495's, but i believe i seen the 497's also at frys..

Yeah, the sound is good but when you wear these for about 3 or 4 hours straight, your ears start to hurt cuz they have been pushed down. Well, that's what happens to me.

Are you using a dedicated head amp, because when driven with one the bass really shines. The 580's really need good amplification to sound good.

habib89:
497 vs. 495 - I had the 497 for a while. The general consensus at www.head-fi.org is that the 497 is slightly better than the 495. Also the 497 is more easily driven from a portable than the 495. However I think the 497 looks cheezy and cheaply made. For $77 - 10 rebate my money is still on the senn 280pro. They provide great isolation (they are closed cans) and I even think they sound slightly better than the sony v6.

I've had a pair of the 570's for almost a year now. Paid something like 106.00 for them. I can tell you, but I'm no audiophile, that they sound fantastic, and thats without a headphone amp. I only have my Hercules GTXP driving them but they are absolutely great for games and music. Just my .02 worth.

ugh.. i had considered the grado's.. but after trying on a pair that a friend had... i'd have to say i'll stick to my hd495's. The 497's are something i'd like for the ear piece style... but the rest of if i don't like.
