The Hobbit.. in HFR (high frame rate) 3D

First I'm hearing of this, I may have to check it out once the crowds die down, 48 fps compared to the usual 24 sounds sweet. I guess there may be a "soap opera" effect because of it but we'll see, so far reviews for it are average. And the theaters better not charge even more for this even though I'm sure they will find a way.

I'm looking forward to experiencing it. I hate watching anything fast paced at 24fps, it's just a blurry mess.

We have a 3D TV here at the house now, and yeah, it was cool the first couple of times ("Look, Nemo is swimming right at me!"), but it just strikes me as a gimmick. It doesn't add anything to the story, doesn't work in all scenes, and when you're in a scene it doesn't work for it really bites. I can do without it.

If I don't rush to see The Hobbit, however, it will not be because the frame rate is too high, but because I don't believe you can get three 2.5+ hour films out of that book. They have to be really dragging some crap out.

Do you lock your computer games at 24fps too? What about the world around you, I guarantee you that is the equivalent of much higher than 24fps

I've seen some videos that are clearly above the 24fps and while at first it looked "odd" it also was nice to see clear, fluid motion like it should be. HFR should be awesome. Not so keen on 3D however.

24 fps is too choppy and blurry. They have to slow action down in movies to make things visible at such a low frame rates. Try panning quickly at only 24fps; it's like a slide show.

I am not sure I'll ever see this movie. I liked LOTR, but the guy has totally lost the plot on this, just made it too long. The reviews I've read said it's got so much filler it would make a dvd extended scenes compilation blush, just not interested in that.

that was my impression too in regards to the new content. If he does it right/well it should be a good thing. Watching the Wise kick sauron out of mirkwood, etc. Lots of chances for ass-kickery.

Slideshow? More like blurry show. They blur everything to compensate the lack of frames, you can't make out anything. I noticed this even as a stupid teen decades ago. You can't make out wtf is going on in movies whenever it's panning.

I suppose I am a little hypocritical. I turn off the "blur" and "lens flare" effects, turn off the limiting monitor refresh rate limit, and keep things as close to 60fps as possible.


I don't know...maybe 48fps is better then the "automotion" feature that most TVS are using.

I saw the movie in 48 FPS / 3D on Tuesday. It definitely has a weird feeling. A lot of the time ispent trying to place what it made me think of and it ended up being british shows / documentaries. Overall, I thought the movie was okay. It started a little slow, but delivered toward the end.

Edited to add: I don't know if it was the framerate, the 3d or something else, but I didn't think that the scenery and buildings looked as good as they did in the original trilogy. Particularly Rivendale. It just looked....fake.

That's funny. I am going to see HFR 3D IMAX tomorrow, and the first thing I am going to do is put on my contacts. I hate seeing 3D movies with my glasses on.

when watching anything with the "soap opera" effect it feels as though you are watching something on a stage, like a play, and everyone is in costume. normal movies/tv shows feel like they are actually in the place they are, and are that person. with the soap opera effect, doesn't feel that way and feels and looks fake.

it also makes the viewing experience different than what the director intended it to be (except the hobbit, since he made it that way). it is kind of like how people don't know how to calibrate their tv's properly and simply make everything bright, even though the colors and what not are all way off.

Same here. I can't stand 120Hz, except for NFL, NBA or MLB games. I am expecting the worst tomorrow but I do want to experience it for myself before I pass judgement.

that is the problem right there. this smooth motion shit makes everything look like a set and on a stage with everyone in costumes, which in turn makes it all look fake.
