I like the trio of instruments in a mariachi band, but.....an 11 or 12 piece band. Guitar + Violin + Trumpet. When you hear maybe 2-3 guitars, 2 trumpets, and 5-6 violins playing the same thing, it's really neat.

For rock bands, I know a band that has a cello on stage. I like the resonating sound of a cello, particularly on solos...so maybe a stand up bass, cello, and electric guitar....don't ask why, but they really make it work when they're unplugged and giving the drums a rest.

For a long time the Doors had no bass player for concerts and a couple albums the keyboard played the base notes, Ray Manzarek. And their sound was very full so yes I would go for Keyboard/synth drums and guitar.

Ray is pretty awesome. He was interviewed on NPR in 1998.

You can play that here by clicking the blue play button on this page....it's worth a listen. He describes the creation of light my fire and some of the things that went on with Jim and the press. Great interview.

Close. It goes Cream > Jimi Hendrix Experience > ZZ Top > Grand Funk Railroad > Rush

But whatever order, if you can get that kind of music out of the guitar - bass - drums then those are the ideal three instruments for a trio.

Hell, the original lineups of bands like The Who, Led Zep and the Beatles only played those three instruments. They used guitar, bass and drums and had either a singer that didn't play or they used a 2nd rhythm guitar. Even the Rolling Stones did 5 guys on three instruments. Keith and Brian on guitars, Charlie on drums, Bill on bass, Mick sang. They all added keyboards, horns, etc eventually, but they all started as guitar - bass - drum bands.

Accordion is the worst popular instrument. That's all I know. Should be reserved for Pirate music only. Or maybe if you are in the French Riviera.

How about the Germans?????

The accordion goes well with many type of musical instruments.

actually it's: The Band > Cream > ....

simply by default of the fact that Eric Clapton left Cream after claiming that The Band made them completely obsolete with Big Pink. Or so says Clapton, anyway....

The Band used keyboards and a sax in their original lineup. That list was about groups that were only guitar/bass/drums.

And Cream split up because Clapton didn't get along with Jack Bruce. Clapton announced the dissolution of Cream months before Music from Big Pink was released.

Ah, I see. The band had an organ + keyboard (and sometimes sax...I think only just for sax interludes during changes or something)

And the second part...nuh uh because Robbie Robertson said that's what Clapton said....and Robertson has never exaggerated!

No, Robbie would never exaggerate. But Robbie was a musician in the 1960's. He might have confused Eric with the purple leprechaun that he believed was living in his navel at the time.
