I somehow completely missed this announcement. I've read all 3 books and love the series. Can't wait to see how it'll turn out on the big screen!

It looks like Mystique from First Class will be playing Katniss.

Anyone else excited about this movie?

Loved the books... but I'm really on the fence about the movie for a few reasons. One is just because movies rarely do the books justice. However they were relatively short books and I believe they wouldn't have to cut too much out. A lot of the book was emotions and internalization that can be seen quicker than can be described.

Also it's a book about kids. Not all young kids, but young enough that the acting might be questionable. They're at the age where you could get a slightly older actor to play a younger role with some make up and such, but we're on the borderline of child actors here.

Anyway I have a feeling this will be fairly popular because the books seem to be. It could be one of the greatest trilogies ever if done correctly, but they have to do it right and have a good cast. They also have to film them quick because the three books take place pretty rapidly. You can't let them age too much or your sense of time will be ruined.

Good concept, but the books had shit writing. The first book was the only one that I truly liked, the other two were mediocre at best.

I am interested to see what they'll do with the movie though.

Then you'll be glad to hear that they've already announced the release date for the 2nd movie Catching Fire, which is Nov 22nd, 2013. (The first movie will be out on March 23, 2012.)

They're 18 months apart, which is decent I guess.

That's strange. I actually thought the writing got much better later on.

It will be interesting to see just how brutally they let the movies play out. I have a feeling the goal will be a PG-13 rating but there were scenes in the book that would need to be toned way down to hit that rating.

The 2nd book wasn't great, but that was more of the story than the writing. I though the 3rd book was pretty solid. 1st was still the best though.

I don't really care when they're released as much as that they're filmed quickly. Something like the LOTR films where they pretty much filmed the 2nd and 3rd ones at the same time and just released them further apart IIRC. It's important to keep the characters at the proper age as it's quite easy to notice when kids start to grow up (like all of the HP chars).

Was just a complete ripoff of the Japanese movie, Battle Royale.

It's not like the idea of having a battle to the death for public entertainment was ever original. What do you think they did in the Roman Coliseum?

Have you even seen the movie? Kids in a school sent to an island to battle it out to the last one? Its the exact fucking same script followed to a "T" and made into a trilogy of books.

STFU because you obviosuly didn't see Battle Royale or read the books

Well, to me, it feels like the first book was written over a longer period of time and proof read several times. The two subsequent books feel like they were written on a deadline (and I'm sure they were).

The first book had a clear cut objective... and it's a great ride. The second book meanders around for the first half, and then the second half is
nearly a clone of the first book
. The third book was the most annoying of all. More meandering where
Katniss spent the first 2/3 of the book in the hospital, it seems
. And the ending comes abruptly, and it's almost obvious that the ending was written before the rest of the book because of the quality of writing and how it's shoehorned into the story.

That's just my observations and something I picked up on.

Nope I haven't, and you obviously really missed my point. I wasn't saying The Hunger Games wasn't a copy, I'm saying it doesn't matter. EVERYTHING is a copy anymore. There's really nothing original. I don't care. It was entertaining. I'm sure Battle Royale was entertaining too. I love dystopian future stories.

Sounds like you need to calm the fuck down fella. Bad day at school or something?

The only ripoff is the government forcing kids to fight to the death aspect. It is otherwise different. Battle Royale is an entire class sent to fight and a big part of the story is the interplay of characters that have relationships before they are sent off. In Hunger Games there are several districts and two kids from each are sent. The rich district is full of kids training to go (winning confers some benefits) while the poor districts going is basically a death sentence.

What Hunger Games does better than Battle Royale is the depiction of the view of these events from the outside. They are celebrated annual events with parades, sponsors and PR teams. Battle Royale spends little time on the view of the event itself but does spend some time talking about the general state of the country.

To say they are the same is sort of like saying 1984 and Brave New World are the same. If you've read both you know they aren't but if you read one and heard of the other you might (incorrectly) think otherwise.

Finished the first book this weekend. Loved it. Because of scheduling it took me forever to sit down for more than a few minutes. 2 weeks for the first half, 3 days for the second half.

Really dug the book though, I need to pick up the next one now.

Katniss is supposed to be mixed race and starving.

Then I saw the trailer . . . . .

*sigh*

Another whitewashing of movies like The Last Airbender.

I read the series and enjoyed the books but I have a feeling they are good to pussify the movie to get it to the target audience. The books were downright brutal, I don't see them doing that in the movies for the age group they are going after.

neat, just finished reading all 3 books back to back, really enjoyed it.

ending kinda sucked though, seemed too convenient.

hope they film the 3 movies back to back, the books take place over a year or so.

I have zero interest. Sounds like it's a twilight series that appeals a bit more to guys. Haven't heard good things about the books and the trailer doesn't look very good.
