A mayor of a village, town or city cannot issue an order to evacuate without the governor's permission, and it is up to the governor as to how the evacuation will take place, i.e., s/he can go along with the mayor's plan or override it. Nagin's plan was overridden by the governor of LA.

Heat. They aborb heat from the water as an energy source to power convection/thunderstorms.

"Meanwhile, as we are watching the Gulf Coast, Rita, Hurricane Rita has now strengthened into a Category 12 hurricane. It is now -- I was watching the Weather Channel earlier today -- it is just a small step away from being a black hole."

It was pretty unnerving to watch the projections change today. That thing is drawing a bead on the Houston/Galveston area.

It looks like my wife and I are going to be evacuating and headed to Killeen this afternoon. She works at a bank right off of I-45 in Spring and will be helping people get all the cash out that they need. Once that happens, we're out of here. I wasn't wanting to leave, but the fact that the eye looks like it's headed straight for us now made me change my mind.

5AM update

REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE
THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS REMAIN NEAR 175 MPH...280 KM/HR...WITH
HIGHER GUSTS. THIS MAKES RITA A POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC CATEGORY
FIVE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. SOME FLUCTUATIONS IN
INTENSITY ARE LIKELY DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 70 MILES...110 KM...
FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP
TO 185 MILES...295 KM.

THE LATEST MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE ESTIMATED FROM REPORTS BY THE
HURRICANE HUNTER IS 897 MB...26.49 INCHES. THIS MEANS RITA IS THE
THIRD MOST INTENSE HURRICANE IN TERMS OF PRESSURE IN THE ATLANTIC
BASIN.

Thanks. We're just taking extra precautions; I'm sure my wife and I - and our home - will come out relatively unscathed, but there will be a lot of people and property that won't.

Thanks for the official updates, too!

I am in Longview, TX. I am hoping to travel to Wichita Falls, TX on friday night and return Sunday night. Does anyone have any guesses on how much the storm will weaken before Sunday night? It seems like it will be the Longview area around the time when I will be coming back, but I don't know if it will be too strong to travel then.

I think you should plan on leaving much earlier than Friday night. Possibly Thursday night?

It's not the trip out that I'm worried about, it's the trip back. I'm leaving friday because I've got classes.

Best of luck to you and everyone else down there.

Heard on the way in that the pressure has risen slightly and the winds have dropped to 170mph. Not sure if it's just an eyewall replacement, a bit cooler water, or something else.

The latest figures indicate a weakening. I wonder if it's just a blip or if it will be a trend.

I need to buy a Segway.

These new graphs look like it'd hit Dallas too...And most people are heading to Dallas to be safe!

Board up your windows? I guess we'll know more about it's path by tomorrow morning. That should still give you time to get to, say, Baton Rouge, or even further up like Little Rock.

Nagin didn't HAVE a plan. If you were mayor and a CATEGORY FVCKING FIVE hurricane was baring down on your city that happens to be BELOW SEA LEVEL and happens to have a LARGE BODY OF WATER NEXT TO IT, are you going to sit there while the governor pulls crap like that, even if she did?

Hell no.

You're going to act. You're going to get a bunch of school bus drivers together, pack up people, and GTFO.

EVEN THEN that says that the governor is stupid and my initial statement still stands.

Those who are in Texas, why chance it? Get the flock out!
