That backpack doesn't look like it would be comfy for the dog to carry.

550 pounds worth of dumbbells from Rogue Fitness. Tired of my squat rack taking up one of my three bedrooms so I’m putting it in storage until I have more space and altering my routine until then.

Kind of an impulse purchase. Saw this string trimmer go on sale and had been eyeing it for a while. I wanted this model as it can accept attachments such as brush cutter. Been using my Ryobi trimmer for brush cutting and I go through string super fast because it's not really made for that. I will try this one as a trimmer first to see how it goes but probably end up getting the brush cutter attachment for it. I might even get to test it out this year if the snow holds off for a bit longer.

As a side note I did well with my Greenworks snowblower purchase last year since it's going for 1k more now. It was on sale for 2k last year. They actually make zero turn mowers too, takes 6 batteries. I'm far from the point where I need one of those but it's cool to see they are making electric ones.

Preshuuuhhhhssss.

This was a fuggit-buy-it-cuz-it's-shiny-purty. It's really not that large, maybe the diameter of a nickel or a hair larger, but thin as a dime. I might spring for a 1oz at some point but that's currently $1K or so. The 1oz has a face value of $100, I believe the highest denominational coin value ever in the US. I know it's the highest currently.

I ordered Starlink. I feel dirty but I’m running out of options for internet. Cable is terrible here and the house was never wired for cable. The DSL is failing and the phone company technicians are telling me that they are running out of good wire pairs to use. The neighborhood wiring is sixty years old and falling apart. The phone company has no intention of replacing it. No one plans to run fiber here. Verizon hasn’t rolled out 5G residential service here and no one else provides reliable cell coverage. I’ll see how it goes.
I set it up this morning. 93Mbps down, 11Mbps up is the fastest so far with the lower end at 58 down, 11 up. Download is four to six times faster than the DSL was at its absolute best. Upload is ten times faster. Ping is 35-40ms, higher than the DSL. For work VPN, the connection is much, much faster. This is probably more a function of the Starlink gateway location relative to my company's gateway rather than any underlying technology.

The good: Set it up, plug it in, turn it on, rename the router and set the password, done.
The bad:

Who designs cable ends like this, knowing that the cable will have pass through walls? Running the cable through the wall took longer than the rest of the setup and the hole was already there. I ended up taping the cable to a rod to push it through the hole.

The cable design was probably Elon's sole contribution to any of the whole thing.

Yeah that's weird that they went with proprietary cable. From what I read it's possible to splice ethernet ends on it since the cable itself is regular ethernet, it's just the ends are weird proprietary crap. Looks like something Apple would come up with.

The one on the right looks like you can snap the cable straight?

Yes, but it still is a barb so if it drops anywhere inside the wall, you're screwed. With straight CAT 5 or 6, it would suck but not as much as with an expensive, proprietary cable.

Upload hit 38 Mbps on the previous run but download was slower. I've been trying tests at different times of day. The connection slows in the evening when more people are at home. If it gets too bad, I suppose I can throw rocks at other people's antennas.

What's impressive is the ping you can get with Starlink. That's the main advantage vs geostationary type of sat internet. Just to put into context on my fibre internet I'm getting about 20ms ping when I do a speed test.

One of my coworkers got Starlink since he can only get DSL where he's at and he said it works great even for working from home and the softphone works fine, which is what I can see Starlink being super good for if you're out in middle of nowhere, you can still get a job that lets you WFH.

I used to do tech support for our own satellite service and it was bad due to latency and instability due to weather and other factors, the service was so bad we stopped offering it but still supported existing customers. This was over Telesat's geostationary satellites. We still have some carrier stuff running through that but it's lower bandwidth stuff so it works ok for what it is. T1 lines and stuff.
