9 tomato plants today in ~4" pots at Home Depot for $4.98 apiece, which is whack. Used to buy a 6 plant tray for maybe 5-6 bucks but I haven't been able to find those for a few years. None of those 6 packs for veges, HD and the nurseries don't carry them anymore, around here anyway.

It's going to rain a lot this week but I'll get them in the prepared ground anyway.

Edit: Planted them all next day.

One last bit of that Dubai chocolate. It's gone forever from that store. Sadness.
I bought some fancy chocolate a few months ago and went through it in less than a month. It was recommended to me in a comment thread at The New York Times. Zotter, and I checked their offerings and got $81.99 Large Discovery Pack. It seems that a lot of the fancier chocolate ventures into strange combinations of chocolate and fruit, which I think is weird. A lot of it was pretty good but IMO it is far from worth the price. I like my Lindt truffles at a fraction of the cost, pick 'em up at Costco when they go on sale in the fall.

This was my first fancy chocolate buy. I just really love the Dubai filling, the chocolate is kind of secondary. Really good chocolate is wasted on me, but I got some free samples of their other offerings and they're pretty good. Not worth the price for my unrefined tastebuds though.

I didn't see your original post(s) about the Dubai chocolate. Can you link it/them, or just maybe describe? You can click the e.g. #4,607 (which is at the top of the post I'm quoting here), but the one for the original post? Once you do that, the URL will go right to that post. You can paste that URL into a reply. Hope this isn't confusing, it's just a feature of these forums.

I've dabbled in some fancy chocolate over the last 10-15 years, not a lot. I still have some from years ago. High end stuff. I'm generally not very impressed with expensive chocolate. A lot of it strikes me as gimmicky. I bought several Amedei chocolate bars, I think I still have a bit. I have some high cocoa solids Lindt, which isn't as expensive. I don't generally go for that kind of thing, I like the sweeter stuff, but don't care for cheap chocolate. I dislike a lot that other people like. I've liked a lot of See's chocolates, I used to go into one of their shops and pick or get an assortment, but stopped doing that around 10 years ago, I'd only do it maybe once a year at most. Other American chocolate hasn't pleased me. I once bought a big Hershey's milk chocolate bar and returned it for a refund, not the kind of thing I do, but I just couldn't eat it, it was so bad. Seems like a dream now, I'm not even sure I did this. It was a local indy supermarket.

Europeans make some great chocolate, but the quality varies a lot. An importer once told me that the sign of well made chocolate is how it breaks. If it breaks smoothly, cleanly, sharply, with a shiny surface, it's the better stuff.

It's sold out, but here's some pics of it:

If you've never had Dubai chocolate, I highly recommend trying it. I'm sure you can find similar quality from other suppliers - it's still pretty popular.

I just bought a few things before prices go up. Sold about $3.5K of audio gear and bought a set of Noble Kublai Khan IEM's at 22% off, to replace the VE set I sold, plus a set of HiFiMan Arya Stealth Headphones on sale, plus a Sonos Era 3 speaker.

I'm gonna be in audio bliss, the Era 300 was a great upgrade to the Era100 I replaced it with. I have a Sonos Era 300, a Move 2, minisub, and an Era100 in my living area, a sonos roam in the kitchen, a sonos one in the bedroom and one in the office. Plus another roam.

I'm gonna be in audio bliss this year while the world burns baby. It's gonna have a good soundtrack!

Calling it chocolate is kinda wrong (from my perspective) because it's the filling that people fall in love with: https://www.thekitchn.com/dubai-knafeh-pistachio-chocolate-bar-review-23676829

It's not really pure chocolate. It's more like a candy bar with an outer (probably thick) layer of chocolate.

I personally did not try the $20 one but a guy in my office gave me a small bit of his melted (it melts fast) pistachio dubai chocolate that cost him roughly $5 (it was slightly larger than the typical middle finger and slightly thicker so still very expensive) and my review is, it was OK. Different but nowhere near worth the price it is fetching. We live in a crazy world where people are hiking up prices of food, Nvidia graphics cards and crypto only with their imaginations.

I finally upgraded to some decent speakers last year, and man it makes a difference. We were talking at work today about how a lot of us ordered stuff we knew was about to go up in price. I bought some bismuth at $12/lb. It's now $25-30.

Yeah, it's definitely not worth the asking price. I made my own and it was... okay. My filling was pretty good. I just wanted to get a taste of the gold standard so I have something to compare against. My biggest problem is getting the pistachio butter smooth enough.

I did some poking around just now on Amazon (won't buy because the boycott doesn't end until Saturday). Put this in my Save for Later list:

Has good reviews and some people use it to make their own Dubai chocolate bars. Probably best to use quality dark chocolate.

Lots of enthusiasm for Dubai chocolate bars at Amazon, the fillings too, most people complain that it's crazy expensive.

I haven't eaten pistachios for close to 10 years I think. I used to put some in my DIY nut mix but stopped, partly because I figure they aren't really a nut. Well, maybe they are but seems kinda weird to include them in my mix:

Roasted: Almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, pecans

plus:

Unroasted walnuts

Pistachios (from Costco, shelled) are relatively expensive, but it seems nothing like the expense of the pistachio fillings and Dubai chocolates selling at Amazon.

I'm a little uncertain regarding an amazon boycott. Bezos is a shitbag, but aren't they all shitbags? Would walmart act any differently in amazon's place? You have to be a sociopath to run a corporation. It's almost required.

I have a few active boycotts on technology/web properties, but there's clearly better alternatives in that case. It's not simply a matter of trading masters.

You can't let perfect be the enemy of good. I would not use Wal-Mart as my alternative though.

Also during a boycott, some people will indeed find alternatives. I found some stuff I wanted on eBay, at Frontier Co-op, Etsy, direct from the manufacturer's site for various things too, and also local shopping. Quitting Amazon almost entirely showed me it was completely possible to do so.

also don't sleep on Costco and Costco.com - the website has a ton of stuff they don't have in the stores. and you are supporting a good company compared to almost any other retailer.

getting things direct from the manufacturers is good too. I got my Kobo eReader right from them, even though Amazon may have been faster. Sonos speaker from Sonos, etc....

everyone should check out frontier co-op though for all kinds of food and home/bath/kitchen goods - all on the all-natural tip as well. I get coffee beans, regular dried beans, body wash, moisturizer, dish soap, cleaning sprays, tea bags, and so much more from them.

Thing with amazon, is it's an everything store. My last order was red popcorn kernels, a cellphone holster, Dubai chocolate, cheap Chinese carabiners, and a flat of kippered herring. That's not even close to my most wide ranging order.

For specific things, especially pricier specific things, I usually go to a specialist, but for a bunch of small weird stuff, amazon is hard to replace.

Sometimes vendors put a card in the package advertising their unaffiliated web store, usually with a discount. Probably violates amazon policy, but whatever. I've gotten some good tips that way, and I start buying directly from the vendor rather than amazon.

edit:
Also safety. Hard to know what small online vendors you can trust. You typically won't outright get screwed on amazon. There's recourse for bad products/service.
