I’ve been back and forth on buying a lithium battery for my track/hpde car. It’s more like $700 for a 40Ah capacity, but should last a decade or potentially much longer. And dropping 40 pounds off the car is a huge deal and much more expensive to do with carbon fiber parts etc.

Do they hold up better than lead acid in cold places?

I am not sure. It’s the same chemistry as EV batteries though which can have ~half the range in extreme cold. I’d suspect they’d start the car just fine but I don’t think I’d recommend for a regular street car when lead acid batteries are so cheap and effective. For my use case the battery would be on a tender from December through March or so and is not daily driven.

edit: cold cranking amps are advertised as significantly higher than lead acid … 1200-1500 amps depending on capacity. So I guess that’s a tentative yes. The company I’m looking at is called Antigravity … their automotive batteries all have a feature that shuts the battery down before it dies fully, and they include a little remote that you can push to restart the battery and then start the car.

Lithium ion can't charge in below zero temps without cells taking on damage, so you would want to make sure it has enough smarts built in to ensure it takes that into account and also has a heater built in to warm it up. If using bare cells then you need to setup these electronics yourself with arduino etc.

I think EVs do that, where they have a heater in the battery so when you charge it, it will heat the battery up first before it starts to charge.

Unless it's a Chevy Bolt, then it just catches on fire. That's a feature.

Good point, probably would be better for my use case where the car sits all winter to discharge the battery to 80% and disconnect rather than leave it on a tender. For a daily driver that could be another reason to just stick with cheap lead acid.

Had to order a printer. My less than three year old printer decided it no longer wanted to work. Epson support decided that I needed to send it to a repair center. It’s out of warranty, so I passed. Amazon says my new printer won’t be here until March. I ordered a laser this time around. I’m done with inkjets, and went with HP this time. I work from home these days so I need a printer. I guess Staples is in my future for the next few weeks.

I bought a cheap, $35 Samsung laser printer about 3 years ago. We rarely use it, but it's nice to have a printer when we need it. Though, if the toner ever needs to be replaced, I may just look for another cheap replacement, since a toner cartridge is probably more than the whole printer. I hate that the business model for many printers is to sell them cheap and charge up the wazoo for toner/ink.

Been using an old Ikea chair for years. Just ordered this since it got pretty good reviews and the price is right.

Got my bike pump and herring today. I'm particularly stoked about the pump. I got it primarily to pump up my throwline launcher. I climbed with a guy last week, and used his pump to pump it up, and it was waaaay easier than mine. I thought handpumps just sucked, but apparently not. I've had mine for ~25 years, and it's had rock solid reliability, but it's brutal to use. Using his was barely like work, even up to 140#. I don't think my old one even goes that high. The sticker wore off years ago.

I have a cheap Samsung, but it’s at my house in NC. I went expensive this time hoping this printer will last longer than my 2.5 year average. Since I bought it I’ve learned that it comes with half cartridges , good for 1500 sheets or so. Replacements are about $100 each, but they will print 6000 sheets. I’m good with that as long as the printer holds up.

But then the old printer goes in a landfill most likely. I’d prefer to pay a few extra bucks for the toner than trash such a big plastic device. Usually you can find cheaper knock off toner that may or may not be the same quality as OEM but will at least do the job.

The key is to buy a GOOD printer, then it's worth keeping. I kinda want a colour laser at some point, so probably pay a good 1k for that for something decent. But then I'll have it for practically forever.

I have a B&W Brother that I've had since college days and still works great, and you can still get the toners for it. That is one thing I always worry about for things that have consumables, is if you can still get the consumables years down the line but so far so good with the Brother one I have.

Yeah, I'd certainly go for knock-off toner before trashing it, provided the toner isn't too expensive. Otherwise, it would end up on Craigslist and someone else could deal with it.

I just loathe the business model of printer companies - basically encouraging people to toss perfectly fine things into the landfill because they want to make their money instead on the consumables side.

Yeah, not paying $1k for a printer my wife and I use <1 time per month on average.

New chainsaw!

I had been eyeing Greenworks chainsaw for a while as it's one of the few 18" electric ones on the market and it has decent reviews and it was on sale so if I was going to buy it at some point may as well buy it now on sale.

Will be a while before I get to use it though unless I take a ride to my property in winter, which I might do. Still need to check if the road gets plowed or not. With the short days it's not really worth going there to work on it though, I'd only get a few hours of work done. But might still go for a ride at some point for fun, if gas prices can come down. Once the house is paid off I want to buy an EV truck.

That has kinda crossed my mind TBH, if I make an igloo I could technically overnight there for a few nights. But I think I'll pass on that and wait until summer so I can build a proper insulated cabin with heat and an indoor bathroom. Sucks having to go outside to pee at night especially if it's cold.

Nice! Their normal double rye is one of my favorite. Miss being able to get that for $29.99 in Kentucky

Store pick cask finish ones running $45-60 these days unfortunately. I’m on the hunt for one they finished in scotch barrels tho which is supposed to be spectacular.
