Went to Costco on Thursday. 1st time since middle of March. That time I went in there with a list, only found one thing, a big jar of cashews. Most of what I wanted they were out of. The lines were humongous in March, it was pansemonium, so I put my cashews back and split empty handed. Part of why I went in the first place was just plain curiosity. Shortly after that the pandemic was in full swing.

Thursday, N95 masked, gloved and goggled, I walked out with a full cart that cost me over $500. I figure I may not want to go back before I'm vaccinated, I have a high risk profile.

Seems wasteful to pay for a membership if you don't go to the store but once every 8 months....

I heard on the radio last week that enough people in a few cities around the country are starting to stockpile stuff again as the case counts are on the rise and Europe is starting to lock down. We actually had stocked up on paper towels and TP in February from Samsclub. That got us through the worst of it, but stocks have been slow to return...finally got another case of each that will last us through Spring or so...but we'd like to get some more, just in case. I'm really hopeful things will at least start to get better by next Summer.

Before the pandemic I was going every 2 weeks. Suppose I could cancel and rejoin in 6 months when I figure to return, hopefully vaccinated. Might save me $30 to do that. Not a huge deal. Anyway, if I cancel I would probably lose my accumulated rebate. I probably won't bother.

I haven't bought TP since the pandemic began. A few years ago I bought a fair sized package of individually wrapped TP at Costco and at the rate I use it it will likely last me at least 3 more years. I can't imagine how people use so much TP. A roll lasts me probably 3 months. Ditto with paper towels, I got some at Costco some years ago and at the rate I use it won't need more for probably 5+ years. Same with Kleenex.

I have a wife and 2 kids.... I personally don't use that much, but I also have 4 bathrooms in this house to distribute the supplies to.

I was just throwing that out about cancelling. It's easy to hindsight things as if to say I knew a cure wasn't going to come out already.... I'm just all about cancelling memberships and services I don't use. I hate subscriptions....they're typically wasteful by design.

The operation was a success and, in what I believe is a personal first, I didn't have to make a second trip to the store to complete a plumbing repair.
Replaced the flapper on a leaking toilet at the rental. Still leaked. Got a new one because...wth? Finally had to call plumber bro. The opening was ever so slightly warped. 😡

That's rough. Sometimes you have to do a lot to keep those from leaking.

Yeah, I subscribe to near nothing. I have a low rate Consumer Reports subscription, around $16/year IIRC, that I let auto-renew in November. I got a special rate NY Times subscription a little over a year ago that I figured to cancel before it auto-renewed at the higher rate (original was $1/week IIRC), but I didn't cancel. Other than that, yeah, Costco, which I'm sure I get my money's worth out of. Never had subscription TV except when we had 5-6 people living here we had cable. That was 25 years ago. I'm free TV, OTA rooftop antennas. TBH, though, I'm considering Netflix HD, last I heard at maybe $18/mo. Have never subscribed to even streaming TV. Had Amazon Prime 30 day free trials a couple times, always cancelled before it hit my CC. Same with Sling TV. The quality was horrible and no timeshifting, WTF.

The only subscription I have aside from core utilities is email. I won't pay someone to shop at their store out of principle.

I justify Amazon because I use Prime Video/Photos/Shipping/Music... Other than that, I've cancelled everything else. I borrow Samsclub cards to get stuff from there.

I never pay Amazon shipping or for their Prime services. When I buy from Amazon I have at least $25 in my cart and get their free shipping or else I buy from one of their 3rd party partners who offer free shipping. The only exception is when I get a used book from them, which always has $3.99 shipping from a 3rd party. Ebay's a good place to get used books, too.

I might buy as much as $2500 worth of stuff at Costco, which I figure easily justifies the card. A woman who worked there came up to me when I was in the checkout line and offered to determine if I would benefit from a higher level card, I forget what she called it, maybe "Executive." She comes back and says I'm borderline. It costs more but the discount is greater, I think is the thing. She said if I was going to make a "big" purchase I should look into getting the higher level card first, such as a TV or something. I already have all the TVs I want, though. 5 days ago when I went I didn't get a single thing that wasn't food or oral supplements. Scratch that, I stocked up on rubbing alcohol.

I buy enough from Costco that my rebate check is usually about $1100 every year, although one year it was only $800. I'd say that more than justifies the membership.

I was Costco shareholder for longtime, and I regularly shop at Costco. So I know lot of stuff about Costco. Your Costco rebate check was never $1100 or even $800. The max Executive Membership rebate check right now is $1,000. And they only increased to $1,000 recently. It used to be $750 for the last couple of years. And for the longest time, the rebate check capped out at $500. I got close couple times at maxing it but never did. But several of my friends always hit the max at both Costco and Sams every year because they own small business and buy lot of items to resell from both clubs.

Spending $50,000 at Costco a year can be pretty easy if you own a business. Spending $50,000 a year for personal is pretty hard.

I dunno, I could spend $50k at Costco pretty easy if I had the budget for it...

It's easy to spend that just on jewelry. And you used to not be able to get 2% back on Costco Travel but now you can so it's even easier. If I was able to get 2% in the past for my Costco Travel vacation bookings, I would've hit the max in the years past.

I just got a new water heater!!!! I am so lame. Our old one was 20 years old and the amount of sediment was amazing. I learned a lot about plumbing by doing it myself, ended up costing the same as getting it installed because of all of the tools/accessories I got. I added an incoming sediment filter because sometimes our city water gets shit in it due to construction/etc.

We get two checks a year, one is tiny and the other is huge--biogger than anyone I've seen cashing the rebate checks every year. I'm not lying. Maybe its due to the business membership instead of the regular? I do not know buy last year they had to go get some more cash from the til because of my rebate check. BTW, the Costco credit card we use we routinely had been putting $15K on it every year for ONE RESTAURANT. And that was only a small part of our annual spending. Everything went on that card, not just what was gotten at Costco. I didn't even realize how much we were putting through one plastic card until one of the last years with Amex and they had an annual report online and WOW.
