Korean last names are 95% one syllable.

some are:: Cho, Kim, Kwon, Park, Choi, Chang etc..

I'm Andy Cho btw..

One thing I don't like about Korean names in US is that they're Chinesified
What do I mean by that?

well, Kim is not actually pronouced like that.. it's actually Gim (with hard G sound)
Chang is Jahng
Cho is Joe/Joh

Koreans names and how it is pronuced and spelled in US are generalized by the Chinese mainstream in US.. they're the ones with names that sound like Changs, Chuang and so on..

<< Rap and Hiphop culture is VERY BIG in Korea now.. If you visit Korea, you'll be bound to see bunch of teens with baggy jeans practicing breakdance.. >>

And let me add that I generally appreciate AMERICAN rap and hip-hop, but I found most Korean rap music pretty much c-rap.

It just doesn't sound right when a Korean guy talks about "Westcoast" and "niggas." My little sister just came back after staying in Korea for 1 1/2 years. She listens to strange sh*t like this once in a while. My other sister tells her to shut the damn music and plays 2pac.

you're talking about shallow wannabes who claim to be rappers but they're really Hip-Pop

There are strong lyricists in Korea who truely appreciate hiphop culture and have true talents..

Drunken Tiger, 2001 Dae Han Min beloved patriot are some of the devoted rappers.

Some I find them even better than some of the cRap in US.. all they talk about is Cash Money Ho.. real airheaded and shallow..

those two artists mentioned adove have some very insightful lyrical rhymes and quality in content

I got a question.

Why were Koreans unable to evict the Japanese during Colonization period? And why still to this day remain divided?

Other nations in history were able to band together and thru a long struggle, eventually, evict the foreign enemy. But, why not the Koreans? Is this a sign of weakness?

<< Historically, Buddism was a dominating religion in Korea due to influences from China.. Currently, Christianity (Protestant) is the biggest in Korea right now. It is safe to say, 50% of Koreans are Christians and 25% of that are really devoted ones.. >>

From my understanding, the idea of "religion" did not exist in pre-modern Korea. The dominant "religion" (or "ideology" would be a better term) was a form Confucianism modified to follow the Korean social structure. And as it was the case with China, other "religions" were not necessarily suppressed. People usually believed in multiple "religions," such as Shamanism, Confucianism and Buddhism. It would be a better argument that they are simply part of the Korean culture.

Christianity is definitely big in Korea right now. I have a couple of theories on why it is so dominant, but I'll just keep that to myself since I don't have enough proofs to back it up. But I can assure anyone that even the most devoted Korean Christian would still speak and behave under the influence of Confucian teachings. I find it very hypocritical when I saw Korean Christians discouraging other Koreans from following some Korean traditions simply because they are "anti-Christ" and follow the idea of this religion called "Confucianism." Yet they themselves are under heavy influence of Confucian ideas and values.

You just opened a whole can of worms to talk about.. this will go on and on.
I suggest you find someone who specialize in Korean history.

As for me, I have great pride in Korea.. and proud to be a Korean-American. Considering we endured a great Korean war with N. Korea, we managed to pull ourselves from dust and look at Korea now!

we have prospered in many great ways internationally.. we possess great ecnomic power and I am proud of my language and such..

some of the mentionable Korean companies::

Samsung: great monitors, cell phones
Hyundai: yea, sucky but great budget car (you don't see chinese making any cars )
Daewoo: cars
KIA: sucky cars
Dialpad.com (free longdistance via PC)
and many many more..

<< Why were Koreans unable to evict the Japanese during Colonization period? >>

Koreans lived had a relatively peaceful history. Their only big enemies were usually China and northern "barbaric" tribes. They usually depended on China under the tributary system in case of major invasion. i.e. The Ming dynasty came to rescue Korea during the massive Japanese invasion in 1592.

<< And why still to this day remain divided? >>

You mean North and South Korea? Too complicated to anwer, I'm afraid. And I don't know the exact answer myself. They just don't get along? Think China and Taiwan.

<< Other nations in history were able to band together and thru a long struggle, eventually, evict the foreign enemy. But, why not the Koreans? Is this a sign of weakness? >>

If you think about it, it was only 36 years. And Korea at the time was no match for the Japanese.

Japan was the only imperial power in Asia. After the Meiji period, they became heavily industrialized and later formed a powerful totalitarian military government. On the other hand, Korea was ruled by a 500-year kingdom under decline. Especially with brutal rule of the Japanese that oppressed just about every human right law there was, I don't think that 36 years was enough time to repel the Japanese colonial rule. I wouldn't exactly call that a "weakness."

<< And why is it that half the population are those 3 surnames? >>

No idea why.

Don't know if this means anything, but Lee, Park and Kim used to be the surnames of the ruling family in Korea.

I have to disagree andy, I think Korea (as a whole) is in a sad state. You have a country, once united for thousands of years, now armed with guns pointed at each other. There is evidence that Korea began even before China, and Chinese once paid tribute to Koreans. So, this once great nation is now ruined in my eyes. If you watched Shiri, you know what I mean. There is a great line by the North Korean standing in S. Korean city and says something like, "Look at these young kids, drunk, and full of poision, while kids starve in the North. And, then later, he says "..but how would you know with your cheese, coke, and hamburgers."

South Korea is an economic miracle, and there are big companies such as Samsung dominating the semiconductor industry, yes. But, at what price? It is no secret that the big chaebol's such as Hyundai, Samsung, etc all got started off Japanese collaboration. During colonization period, the Japanese realized they could not win over Korea unless they divided our nation. Therefore, they went to the rich landlords and yangban, and told them, you will have your land taken and family killed, but there is an alternative. We will pump thousands of dollars into you if you support us. Those who took the offer, began great huge companies. And those who refused were forgotten.

I don't see any pride in Korea, only shame. Once a proud and glorious nation, now only divided with the North going crazy with communism, and the South being a puppet to the US.

Lee, Park, and Kim were the ruling yangban class names. Peasants and slaves did not carry surnames back then. But, when the peasants/slaves were granted freedom, they decided, of course, to choose the richest names. So, when you see a dark colored Kim, you know something is up. HAHAHA.

In how many categories would you classify Koreans by the way they dress? At my school, there is a high percentage of Asians, and all the Koreans seem to have the same haircut--shaved on the sides and longer hair on top. Many Koreans also seem to use gel and pull the hair on top, back. The ones that do this also seem to wear baggy pants, turtlenecks, Fubu and Pure Playaz T-shrits. Then, there also seems to be the "smooth" Korean, wearing Khakis, some tight T-shirt or sweater--they seem to not use gel, but it seems like they have the same haircut.

Is this correct?

Also--how do you tell Chinese people from Koreans? I know this guy from Hong Kong, who dresses and looks exactly like a Korean(baggy pants, etc).

That's all.
