The infamous Question:

I play a lot of video games, and do a small bit of zipping, etc... Would a 2 GB upgrade be noticeable for me? Especially if I turned off virtual memory and had all of my apps loaded into my physical memory?

Thanks,
Sean

Baddest thing you can ever do to make windows run faster, no matter how much memory you have.

Well, with the latest games right now, the memory isn't the bottleneck, so you wouldn't see a difference. I would look for the newer games coming out (BF2 and beyond) to see a difference with having 2GB. That's a very controversial claim though, so you might want to stick with 1GB for now and see what people say (or reviewers for that matter) about adding an extra GB when newer games come out.

Windows defy the rules of logic

For some reason windows just need to have it's pagefile, ofcourse it will be less used the more memory you have, atleast up until a certain point. Only heavy 3D, video, picture editors use that much memory ATM.

I do work with the Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield editor every once and awhile.. building those maps can get slo-o-o-o-ow as they get more complex.. perhaps the 2 GB would help there?

Unless you're using some very RAM hungry apps like AutoCAD, Photoshop (on a professional basis) or VMWare for instance, there's not need for more than 1Gb. No games right now will benefit from it. Waste of money for gaming.

The first exception to that rule may be BattleField 2 since BF1942 was such a RAM whore, but we'll see.

Oh NEVER turn off Virtual Memory. You'll regret it. There are some apps that won't work properly at all without virtual memory.

If you bothered to read the other threads on this identical subject, there are games TODAY that benefit SIGNIFICANTLY from having more than 1GB of memory. WOW and EQ2 are two examples.

If you know nothing about it, why does it sound good? And it's impossible to turn off Virtual Memory.

About the only games that need more than 1GB are MMORPGs of just about any type esp. if you run more than one client. and as noted AV people and photoshop people can use all the memory you can throw at them also it looks as if BattleField 2 is going to want more than 1GB and w/ memory a mere $80 for 2x512 it can't really hurt to upgrade

No, neither WoW or EQ2 use more than 450MB, I've played both and check on many occations. you will see very little with over 1GB with those two games.
